  1. I would suggest that a lot of gentlemen politicians avoid automatics as they are likely to wear out or damage the rotor bearings :startle: Cheers, Vic

  3. I'm not sure if this has been posted here before, but a few days ago I happened across a swiss horology documentary that I totally fell in love with, so in case anyone hasn't seen this, please, sit back, relax, and enjoy. https://youtu.be/sOp4qvaJHOg

  5. Hi All, I'm a late commer to watch repair. As I've mentioned in a reply to one of the members, the place where I work ordinarily goes as far a movement replacement. The owner has good reason to limit the depth of the repair, but I can't help but want to go into the nuts 'n bolts. Therefore, I have to find my own time to try things. With a busy home life, I'm limited. Since I can replace movements I came up with a handy way to pull the stem (I can never find a movement holder). I was taught to use an old stem as a release but, sometimes find it awkward I modified two types of dental flossers. They permit me to hold the old stem with my index finger while using my thumb and middle finger to hold the movement. I broke the tip off the flosser and used a pin vise to drill a hole to thread the stem into the end. One style gives me a way to depress the dimple when it's offset. The other style uses a sewing machine needle. I've attached photos. Hope someone finds this helpful, Dave

  9. Your order of progression is just about spot on foe me too Anil. When I realised that I could no longer afford to pay to get watches serviced because I had too many, I decided to learn how to do my own servicing. The down side of this is that I now purchase more watches that never, but the upside is I can buy non runners and save a fortune. I just have to learn to start selling some! Regarding the IPhone, remember that even when it I old or broken, it would be really easy to turn it into a sundial. :)

  10. Hello Toptime, Like everything else this largely depends upon how much is in your budget. The Optivisor style magnifyer which is hands free is favoured by a number of folk and the Bay has a number of different options on sale if you search the forums for "Comfortable magnification" you will come up with Al's thread and others but there are some links below, and a number of folk give opinions. In general you need something that keeps the magnification in place while you use both hands and I personally can only use Loupes by holding them in place with one hand so I purchased the spectacles with flip up loupes and use them for examinations. 3.5X Power at about 4 inches distance seems the optimum magnification and working space. Its no use getting really good magnification if you can't work on the watch unless your requirement is inspection only. A while ago for Christmas I got a Brunel stereo microscope which has changed everything for me and gives me working space and up to 70x magnification but I know that it may not be in everyones budget. http://www.watchrepairtalk.com/topic/748-handy-clip-on-dual-loupe/?view=findpost&p=5843&hl=visor http://www.watchrepairtalk.com/topic/947-comfortable-magnification/?hl=visor http://www.watchrepairtalk.com/topic/337-brunels-entry-level-bm1-long-arm-microscope-review/ Hope this helps but further tracing under magnification etc will give more results. Welcome to the Forum. Cheers, Vic

  11. haha.. this is a textbook case of watchitis..the progression of the disease usually follows the following .... 1.First you buy watches any old how.. 2.Then you become a snob and buy only swiss. 3.you then realize there are some other countries which make good watches..eg America. 4.You slowly realize that ETA and AS movements are not that rare and interesting anymore.. Usually by this time you have progressed to light tinkering of your watches.. movement removal.. signing on WRT forum.. 5.You then narrow your focus down to higher end watches like Longines and Omega..selling your earlier purchases to fund your latest 'fix' 6.You finally realize that nothing else except the best will suffice.. hence more expensive, haute horlegerie forays. 7.The final and terminal stage is when you have bought that ultra rare Patek Phillipe with all the complications under the sun and you come to the conclusion that there is nothing that this watch can do which can also be done by done by an smartphone. You then sell all your high end watches to a WRT forum member by the name of Anilv for the token sum of USD1.00 each and retire to a hut in the mountains. While walking in the woods one evening, you stay out late past sunset (no watch right?!!) and get lost in the woods. Your body is discovered 3 years later, next to a crudely fashion sundial and a smartphone (dead). ps.. I am probably around step 5.. :D

  12. well Mark, being serious for a change, although I just tinker with watches I reckon this is a good cause and I will send a contribution. If those not "in the trade" all sent even a tenner it must surely add up to something and it is worth a punt as far as I am concerned. I don't like monopolies, especially when they are designed to screw us over. Vic
