  1. Newbies or old timers risk a faint when they see the price tag on an A.LANGE&SOHNE or Audmars Piguet not to mention Jaeger LeCoultre. I take it you mean something to practice on and perhaps wear eventually, so you want to look into something cheap and one to which spare parts or donor movements are easy to find and wouldn't hurt the wallet if theres a mishap. SEIKO 5 is the junk that meets these requirments, works like a mule, looks like a watch and doesn't hurt your wallets much. Buy two or more of the same calibers of Seiko 5 and save £ & $ . Show us a pic of the movement and ask questions before you buy. Good luck pal.

  2. Hi I should go back over the cleaning routine and make a close inspection of the jewels and pivots for deposits and the same for the balance, make sure ther are no deposits left causing problems.

  3. Keep in mind that a name on a dial doesn't necessarily mean that's what it is. Be wary of sellers who don't post pictures of the movement and/or post blurry pictures. You should also see if there's a legible case reference in one of the photos and look up to see if the movement is supposed to be what's in there. That's what markr was getting at. India is notorious for "frankenwatches" where they'll cobble together whatever parts they have on hand and sell it as whatever the dial says it is. I would also specifically ask the seller if a watch listed for parts/repair actually has all its parts. I've been burned more than once where there is a part missing, which indicates that it was sold FOR parts and the hardest part to find is the one that's missing.

  4. If the code for the ATTiny is published, then you could probably adapt the code to use pretty much any Arduino style microcontroller. Even if it isn't I suspect writing suitable code to drive a couple of GPIO lines in such a way as to send a motor scurrying backwards and forwards is not going to take a lot of effort. A while back I needed to agitate some chemical or other for an hour or so. I used a microcontroller (an STM32diono blue pill board for what its worth) to control a small RC servo, which I used to pull a piece of string back and forth, which rocked a plastic milk bottle. It did the trick. Arguably I could have better spent my time sitting with a cup of coffee and rocking the bottle back and forward by hand, but where's the fun in that? They look pretty useful. ebay also has quite a number of choices, including these rather strange looking ones.

  8. An update - I've actually been getting decent results using 30 gauge wire and Ivory soap. I'll still probably investigate tube/charcoal etc. but for now this is working.

  10. Standard sizes of staffs exist but it doesn't mean yours is a standard size and even if it is, a replacement may not be available. You'll have to measure the staff and we can help you find a replacement if possible. The next problem after that is reassembly.

  11. The second video flickers and you cannot see what is going on. That type of movement has a balance and as it hit the deck I expect the balance staff has broken. Is the balance wheel tilting to one side and if you shake it does it rotate. If your answer is no then the staff has broken.

  12. Not sure because the holes in the front of the case do not line up with the holes in the dial.

  17. I'm curious about how did the repair go? The reason I'm curious is I saw this interesting video on YouTube apparently another less than satisfied customer.
