Hi guys. This is interesting. I took apart a 30s Bulova 10 A.I movement. It's Swiss movement but I thought Bulova was American (?)

Anyway, look what I found on the other side of the watch face. Somebody has engraved a star of David. And I think a date which is written right to left. I have no idea what the 10 1/2 F is.

Why would somebody have done this on a place on the watch that would never be seen? My mind can't help thinking about Europe in the 30s and that maybe it was a bar mitzvah gift or something similar but they had to keep their Jewish identity a secret...

No idea about the 10 1/2 F either unless it's the size in ligne that the dial fits. Something on the order of 23.68 mm. Sadly, you're probably correct about the need to hide the Jewish identity of the recipient. Bulova was at one time a US manufacturer that utilized Swiss movements. Currently the brand is owned by Citizen Watch of Japan and split into two lines. Bulova which utilizes Japanese movements and Bulova Accu-Swiss which was formerly known as Bulova Accutron. The Accu-Swiss line is supposedly Swiss made.

purchase price?maybe this was something  jeweler did to mark watches he sold or serviced , rather than something the buyer had done.

Maybe. What currency would that be? I was curious and looked up the date..

On Sunday the 14th of September 1930:

The German federal election was held. The Social Democrats remained the largest party in the Reichstag, but radical parties made dramatic gains. The Nazi Party surged from 12 seats to 107, becoming the country's second largest party at a stroke. Communists also gained, increasing their seat count from 54 to 77.

    • You will still be looking for a balance complete I’m afraid, this is the balance staff, balance wheel and hairspring in one package. Hairspring and the balance wheel are matched in the factory. Whilst we can change a balance staff the hairspring and balance wheel stay together.   Tom
    • The hairspring end has come adrift from the small terminal barrel.  I have tried to remove the taper pin to relocate it, but the task is beyond my skill set, eyes, hands and being in my 70s, probably beyond my life expectancy.  It is not too badly mangled on the end.  On the ebay offer, that really is a bit on the rich side.  I'll keep looking, maybe a good hairspring will turn up with a shot balance staff. As for time spent on knees.  I made up one of these from 3M magnetic tape and a piece of wood.  It works well for magnetic parts. Other things I have suffered with.  I found lubricants so very expensive that I bought some very small syringes and tiny needles.  I just decant a drop into my oiling pots when I start a movement and the remainder keeps really well in the syringes. Finally identifying the correct screw for the part led me to make up the board in the final pic.   Thanks for the info. Kind regards   Chris
    • Yes that's the type @watchweasol is referring too but I don't like them as you don't get any feel to what's happening.
    • Hi there Stoller,   Caliber is generally stamped under the balance or thereabouts.  Caliber can't neccessarily be identified by bridge layout. Regs
    • Unless you've got any better suggestions Isn't that what this forum is about? It still depends what state the balance is in to start with. Edit You see, it's things like this that really wind me up and make me wonder if it's worth even sticking around, think I'll say goodnight and keep well
