It depends on the type of movement you are putting in the clock, battery or brass?

The first will be battery as 10 yrs ago when I was all gung ho for scrolling I bought everything for 3 clocks. Now that I'm closer to completion I'm thinking I could make the cavity deeper to fit a real cuckoo mvmt. I just need to know if they are a standard height

Regula make a 1 day and 8 day movement, these can be bought at time savers. A few things you need to know, the depth, the movement will need to be screwed to the inside of the face board, so about 6 mm think blocks need to be glued on to take the screws, then add the distance from the mounting bracket to the tip of the crutch, then add another 50mm so you have enough room for the cuckoo belows. The hight is dictated by where  the hands arbour hole is placed on the face. The width you have already since you have made the frets. Have a look on eBay at cuckoo clocks for sale to see how they are normally set up on the inside to give you an idea.

First one is going to be quartz. I just measured the darn thing and forgot the dimensions. I think its 4" wide by 6" high. Original plan has it 2" deep but I can alter it to make it deeper.

I stained and varnished enough parts to make a complete clock but I cant make up my mind which looks better. Should I make it dark overlays or medium?

I think the 1st photo looks better with more of a contras, just remember to put the dial with the 12 at the top.

I thought so too but I just realized how the color is like that. I didnt read the directions for the stain and didnt wipe the excess off thats why its so dark. I hope these old messed up brains can remember to put XII at the top, lol  ;-)

Where’s the pendulum?!

i love it, it has come out so well. Pick up a movement and do the second one old school in dark stain with a cuckoo bird and bellows then the third one white with gold highlights. :)

Now that this project has been completed, I hope that some of you might be inspired to pick up a scroll saw and try out this craft. Its not hard, just tedious and repetitive but you can make some beautiful pieces of art and there are all kinds of patterns out there for everything one could imagine. This clock is not difficult at all, there are clocks that take guys months or even years to make. Cherry tree toys has the most awesome patterns I've come across and Berry basket has some simple yet beautiful stuff, in fact this clock is from a pattern by Cherry tree toys.

    • If at all possible, find a service guide for the automatic movements your work on, because the lubrication procedures may have different requirements or rely on oils you would not use in a manual wind train (in addition to the braking grease you mentioned). Some autos like older Seikos do not have a manual wind option, so the procedure of letting down the mainspring without being able to use the crown may require a screwdriver in the ratchet wheel screw and great care. Do you have an auto movement you were planning to start with?
    • I am an amateur, so there's that. I do not get fixated on amplitude, lift angles, and beat error. However, 4.8ms would bug me if it were my watch. But you must judge your own skills to appreciate the possibility of going backward. I suggest, that you button it up let your friend enjoy the watch for now. As your skills progress, come back to it and correct it. I assume that this watch has a fixed hairspring pin. Some modern watches have an adjustable pin along with adjustable regulator. These are trivial to get in beat. I own a valjoux 726 my dad gave me on my 18th birthday (a looooong time ago). I broke the ratchet wheel with an aggressive wind 4 yrs ago. I have been waiting for my skills to progress before doing a service. I am close. Your advice is well placed and I will apply it.
    • I didn’t find any anomaly to the left of the red mark…reflection? this is the balance in its pivot in the inverted assembly. i can’t see any obvious kinks  and the spring is flat as far as I can see. Either the stud screw is missing, or it’s glued in… I don’t know. I’m loathe to fiddle with it. Any further insights? Thanks!
    • Update!  I've dismantled it, cleaned all the glue off, and rebuilt and lubricated the base movement. I'll leave the chrono part for another day. It's running well - great amplitude and keeping time, but it's got a beat error of 4.8ms.    How important is it to correct this? I'm worried that the potential for making things worse having to take the hairspring off and on repeatedly to adjust this. Would anyone here accept it at that?
