To improve my skills and to try things I have not done before I started a challenge: "Here we go, I know everything 100". The rules are simple:

I must repair/service 100 different movements and there must be at least one successful balance staff replacement done.

I have already completed 11 of them and 3 more are already on the bench waiting for parts to arrive / shellac to dry / waiting for me to get the practical knowledge on the lathe or buying a molfres. I am away from my bench till September and until then I am going to add the pics I took about the finished watches.

HWGIKE#1 Ronda Matic 1239-21

Full service, there was an excessive amount of oil in it. Spent hours looking for parts on my carpet with my reading glasses and a torch. Swiss lever, 17 jewels, automatic.

HWGIKE#6 FHF 96 ST (standard).

Full service, needed a new setting lever spring. Swiss lever, 17 jewels. MAJOR mistake is made. I checked the train for free running before screwing the bridge down, but one of the lower pivot jumped out and chipped / broke the jewel. Had to source one from one of my Seitz set, and had to use my Seitz jeweling tool. Not happy about the mistake but i am happy that I could sort it.

Full service, two worn parts are replaced. Swiss lever, 17 jewels, calendar and alarm. Home painted dial. Two new crowns, unfortunately they are higher than the original so it looks like a rabbit now. These were the only ones I could find with Cousins. Hands are re-lumed. Not very attractive but the movement is running happily with a nice performance.

Full service haha, 15 jewels, swiss lever. MAJOR, MAJOR MISTAKE WAS MADE! We could call it as the train of mistakes. 🙂 Benny Hill would be proud of me. Realized that there was a broken jewel, so I pushed it out... did not mark the jewel hole... only silly ppl do so, you obviously do remember what jewel hole is missing a jewel dont you? So I selected a jewel for a wheel which was incorrectly selected and tried to push it in into the setting lever spring threaded hole. (i did not know this that time). I could not... so i used some excessive force... so I smashed the jewel into dust with my seitz jeweling tool... not to worry... in the factory they did not align the hole size to my seitz set, it must be just a bit off... so I thought, so I reamed it out... placed the jewel... happiness... ohh... its upside down.. lets push it out and flip it... done... happiness.... train wheel re-assembly.... ohh dear, one of the wheel has only a hole.. no jewel.... all right lets select a correct jewel this time... (the seitz jewel set had no jewel which had 1mm OD and hole size above 19 so i had to use one size bigger in OD and consequently i had to ream the hole out to the next size, the correct hole this time), jewel placed, good end shake, free run.. happiness.... lets put together the keyless work... for some reason the screw for the setting lever spring did not want to catch.... ohh dear.... I am a happy owner of a Chinese 1.1 mm tap now! Hahahaha... 😄

Will continue this in September.

HWGIKE#12 Raketa 2628H 61009

Full service. Major mistake(s?) were made. What does the one do who does not release the power before taking off the pallet bridge? Well that's a good opportunity to practice how to glue the pallet stone back with shellac. I am actually happy about it because now I have a shellac syrup I can apply at any time anywhere where it is needed. I still need a pallet warmer though because I don't want to wait a week or so for the shellac to dry. I also managed to break the balance stuff? I had 6 weeks off when I could not touch my lovely watchmaker tools at all, but before I went the balance stuff was ok.. so do I think and when I returned one of the pivot was broken.... well we had visitors meanwhile, but it is highly unlikely that they played with it... anyway I bought a balance complete, but the new staff was too long so i had to borrow some Russian spacers from a poljot movement for the balance cock to adjust the end shake. Its performance is surprisingly good, almost a straight line on the time machine and the amplitude is great too.

Sounds familiar. Err.. not that I would ever do such a foolish thing of course 🤫

I have a similar TV faced Sekonda that I managed to get to run at pretty much COSC standards, despite my rudimentary servicing and cleaning setup. Nobody was more surprised than I was. They seem to be very robust and survive years of lack of servicing without too many complaints.

I love the Jaquemart automation pocket watch conversion. Excellent work.

While we are in the process of confessing to our follies, here is my second attempt at fitting a crystal to this bezel.

Apparently I didn't learn from my mistake of tweaking the crystal press "just a quarter turn more to be sure" the first time, so I did it again, just in case this one needed the extra little bit of tweakage that the first one didn't need.

Yes it is the correct size crystal, I've just rechecked for the umpteenth time as I still have the chipped original. I can't blame the watch, or the tools, just the tool operator

Do I have any more of this size? Of course not, so now I can wait a few weeks for the replacements to arrive on the slow boat, and contemplate my life choices in the meantime.

I bought a pack of ten this time. Based on previous performance, that probably only increases my chances of getting it right by a small margin.

Hmmm what's it like on sourbread toast ?

I had some shellac prepared for french polishing, put some of it into a small jar and added extra shellac so now it has the consistency of a a syrup.

HWGIKE#13 Longines 25.17

Full service. I have a new number one enemy. Hairspring was replaced with hairspring with Breguet overcoil. Spent about 8 hours with just that. Nice performance at the end. A little bit awkward shape, my movement holders did not like it, otherwise a nice movement and was good to work on it. This is a watch I sold earlier, but came back as it was not a reliable runner. Had to work on the case too, it came apart easily now its a tight fit.

HWGIKE#14 ETA 2789

Full service without mistakes. Very nice performance, had to tweak the beat error a bit to bring it down to zero but with this type of regulator it is easy.

Full service. Pin pallet with very nice performance after the cleanup. Re-lumed hands and dial, looks cool in the dark. About the same age as me. Don't clean the dial with IPA though, i damaged the lacquer a little bit.

HWGIKE#16 Oris 292

Pin pallet. Snowfall on the time machine but it keeps the time. Case/caseback are a bit battered. Hands were re-lumed before me. My apprentice did most of the work. It was very difficult to push the stem in when the movement was in the case, that was actually the most difficult thing during the service. No major mistakes were made. It should have received a new may main spring, but I have not got one and still runs reasonably well with the old one.

Pin pallet. Water damaged so it was a lot of work to clean all parts. Its a miracle that it runs and shows an acceptable result on the time machine. Could not find a second hand for it yet. Did you know that you not just can use a hair from the back of your hand for oiling but you can paint with it? Just in case when you wash off some of the numbers from your date disk? Three more Oris movements in the queue and then I move on to something else.

HWGIKE#18 Oris 451

Full service. Mixed two wheels on the rocker bar, took me 2 hours to realize. Kept the time overnight. Pin pallet. I relumed the hands and the numbers on the dial next time I might play with the color of the lume. I can use it as a reading lamp now. 🙂 It should have received a new mainspring but I have not got one.

After a full service it has an excellent performance, zero beat error and the amplitude is above 300 almost fully wound though. Pin pallet. No mistakes were made. I only took the pictures, my apprentice did everything. 🐈‍⬛

    • Hi guys. @VWatchie Those images are self hosted (not hosted on this server). Do a look at the page source and you will see this. I’m afraid, I can’t have control or backup images not hosted on this server. ( They seem to be served from here: https://qehvsw.bn.files.1drv.com/) This server is backed up fully every night and the database is backed up and versioned every hour, all stored off site on Amazon S1 platform. It’s hard for us to lose data. Ive got a huge overhead of space on this particular server the site is served from so no worries there 🙂 Sorry all for lack of response so far, I have been extremely busy and am embarrassed to say that priorities had to be set in place for a while.  Be assured that i’ve got constant monitoring and alerts should the site be in an extended problematic state (down etc) and work on these issues if they arise.
    • Web sites are cheap. Message board are easy. Hosting both is less than 100 usd a year and small advertising would cover most of that.  In the discord group we did some 15 min poc and threw up a couple of different message boards on a domain i host.   The real value is the data / information / hive mind While I'm a rank amateur in watch repair the information and assistance on this board is invaluable. The members on here are friendly, entertaining and a wealth of knowledge This is what needs to be preserved  --Jeff

    • HWGIKE#57 Valex FEF 190 15 jewels Swiss lever full service and repair This one was waiting for a balance staff replacement in my cabinet parts and case cleaned up with a new balance staff and a 4th wheel as the original 4th wheel had a broken pivot for the off center second hand. I never attempted a balance staff replacement before however I received a Bergeon Molfres (i was hunting it for about 2 years) and with the help of it I managed to remove the old staff and riveted the new one in. It also received a new MS, crystal and the hole for the MS arbor was also tightened. With the new MS now it has an acceptable performance meaning that the amplitude goes up to 280 fully wound, has an acceptable beat error and I have the two nice lines but only dial up, dial down is not as nice and I could not figure out as why. I have the two lines but the amplitude is dropping to around 230 and the lines are a bit hairy. Both dial up and dial down the lines just go up and down without seemingly any pattern. I cleaned the movement two times, and then a 3rd time pegged out the main plate and train bridge holes but made no change. Both the HS collet and the roller table was too lose on the new staff... I did not count how many times I took the balance cock off to sort out the HS collet, the roller table and the beat error, somebody before me also shortened the HS by pushing it out a bit and it seems every time somebody is messing with the end of the HS the protruding bit is most of the time twisted bent etc. This one was probably one of the most challenging repair and service. I might take the new MS out and clean it lubricate it as I just pushed the new one in to the barrel from the retaining ring. Plus started to re-read the theory of the escapement and how to analyse the graph on the timing machine: Greiner Chronografic Record manual. I am also thinking to put the watch on a 24 hour long run with the eTimer SW it once helped me to figure out what was wrong with a watch. There is an interesting part of the Greiner record manual talking about the pallets and the end shake of the balance and pallet staff. Maybe this is my issue? Who could that possibly identify? After a few years now I am still without a clue how could watchmakers make parts I can only see with my microscope or how could/can they carry out complicated services impossible to do.. real magic..... .... ..... before I sent this post while the pics were uploading I had an idea, i was browsing the possible outcomes on the timing machine I had one for magnetism..... so I demagnetized the movement and it is not hairy now.... two really nice lines 0.2 ms beat error still a bit wavy, but a lot lot better..... argh....
