Got this pocket watch as a gift but a couple weeks ago the winding mechanism stopped working

I can set the time and wind it backwards but it wont wind right to start the watch and when I try it provides too much resistance to even try to force it

Help would be appreciated

Thanks

Hi, do you suspect that the watch is already fully wound, but not running?

Open the back and give the watch a slight twist in your hand - does the balance wheel swing back and forth?

Hi welcome to the forum   If you can remove the back of the watch and provide a photo it would be use full     What make of watch is it, Modern or vintage/antique.  It sounds like somthing has gone awry with the clutch assy.

A fault from winding pinion and on, normaly up to the click and to a lesser degree barrel and gear train. Strong resistance is charachterisric of click spring stuck underneath the ratchet wheel.

Hi  are we looking at th same watch ?  first has a train on it second looks like a chinese sketeton movement, third and fourth have a polished chrome back with the work black on.

In any case the back should be a snap on fit removable with a knife in the join and twist. The fact it looks like a chinese sketeton movement would say its modern and without looking in the back of the watch it is difficult to deduce the problem.  I have had these where the keyless work is roughly made and have had similar problems

If I am reading correctly it has a full wound but not running. Forcing anything with watch is a No No. If the watch is not running but is fully wound there is another fault.

The train is on the case cover. It's closed over the dial in image one, open to the dial in image two, and so on.

As the watch is brand-new and it was recently received, return it to the giver and see if they can get it exchanged or repaired under warranty.

Chinese pocket watch costing less than €5, unfortunately quality is "not the best". Can be taken apart to learn and then used for decorative purposes.

As the watch was a gift I was trying to avoid the references to price. But as a gift it's the thought that counts. Then whoever gave the watch did not pay this it usually gets marked up higher in this country.

Then the phrase can be taken apart isn't always entirely correct. I don't pay attention to what we sell but I think we were selling these at work and one required looking at and getting the back off was almost impossible. Then service it was equally almost impossible because the watch was not meant to be serviced. Then happily I returned the watch and its back off to the front room and let them deal with how they were going to put it back on again or not.

    • This conversation is becoming a very confusing. The etachron system is a very nice system for manufacturing watches. As you know it consists of two components the stud and the regulator pins. Beautiful thing of this system is you can open up your regulator pins center the hairspring and as you close the pins they will close equally on both sides providing you centered it in the first place. It's not like you're going to become closer to one side or the other as the definition of the regulator pins is a bit confusing it's not exactly a slot sort of. I'm thinking maybe a little eight reading will be helpful for you. Then the file name was changed by me at the US patent but the wording of Seiko may or may not actually be attached to it soared up? I just did that so I can find it in my files. Normally patents are in people's name if they work for a company the company name will be there you'll notice the person lives in Japan which is interesting as the name would imply that this is a Swiss product. Somewhere I think I have the patents for the stud and I believe that is Swiss like a lot of things their Japanese and Swiss and then the Japanese let the Swiss name stand as it seems you more popular in case as you read up on the patents of the regulator pins or pin will see and it should explain exactly how and why it works also why it's important to always close at an open in specific directions because the pins actually have a shaped to them it's very hard to see the shape as it's very tiny.   As a reminder with this system it's mass-produced. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they use cameras and computers to do all of the adjustments.  The meaning of this is that the majority of watches will function as there supposed to and do what they're supposed to do the system will allow us for some minor in tolerance and has more than likely as I said no human hand is ever touched those watches that's the way they left the factory and they work fine. • These still seem stupid expensive for a bottle, but still £100 cheaper than than the Moebius ones. Anyone have any experience of these: https://www.cousinsuk.com/product/epilame-fixodrop-special-bottle-horotec
    • Yes, this is not a basic part. Here are some pictures of making one
    • I bought an old Bergeon 5555. The bottom of the tank was full of petrified salts, which also corroded the metal parts a bit. I would use just distilled water.
