Hello everyone, I have a bit of beginers question that'd a appreciate a bit of help with. I just picked up an old Longine from early 20th C and would love to get it running. As it was missing a stem I sourced one on ebay and was hoping to give it a wind just to see where I'm at but am having problems inserting the stem. I turned both screws below the level of the stem in the photo but neither allowed me to incert the stem further. Am i missing something, ie. should i try another screw or might there be another reason why i can't get it in.

Apologies in advance if this is an obvious one, I am very new to watch repair and tinkering.

Have you tried loosen the setting lever screw a bit, like slightly more than a full turn?...

   the stem may be rusted on the crown gear inside.

Iam sorry but most responses seem to be about removing the stem but correct me if iam wrong OP said it was missing a stem and he got a new one from eBay. The stem in the picture I will assume is the new one he is trying to put in. The screw HSL mentioned is the correct screw but if after a couple turns you can’t insert and/or it won’t stay in after screwing that screw back in then I will assume the keyless works are locked and to unlock them you will need to take the dial off.

Correct.  It sounds like we have a fault/displaced keyless work blocking the stem and the only way in is via the front, so it means hands and dial off, then re asses the situation again whilst fitting the stem

Many thanks for all the help and apologies for the delay in responding. I managed to get the appropriate sized screwdriver and did as vinn3 suggested to great effect. This allowed me to slide in the stem and lock it. I was now able to move the hands. However...

when i try to wind  the stem it immediately springs back the exact amount i have wound.

Also the lower screw in the photo [with the arrow around it] has come loose, I presume i over did it when i opened it previously and have now dislodged the connecting part.

If anyone has any suggestions I'd love your feedback, as a novice i do not wish to damage this watch so if you think it best to begin on a lesser models and leave this to the pros i would happily hear this too.

If the mainspring unwinds back through the stem then the click may have failed. On these earlier longines the click spring is concealed under the barrel bridge. 
 

Loose screw - most likely you loosened the bolt screw to far and it has fallen out. Remedy - remove dial to reveal bolt (aka setting lever and hold static while you reinsert the stew again).

      @VWatchie I believe that function to turn ads off is a Patron and moderator perk as they contribute to the site with money or time respectively.   Tom

      Yes, now that you mention it, I think I remember (it was a very long time ago) creating a link for each picture, and that was massively time-consuming. I'll edit the post once I get the time for it. By the way, it's good to see you back on the forum! I have no idea how much the ads are bringing in, but I hope it’s at least enough to keep things running — and maybe even leave Mark a bit extra for stuff like food and rent. Not sure if everyone can do this, but you can actually turn off the ads. Just scroll down to the bottom of any page, click on "Theme," and pick one of the "No Ads" options.

      Why now Mark ?  And which contact has brought you here ? People have been trying for bloody months to get hold of you for reassurance. Shite way to run a forum tbh. Seven months since you last visited. I think we all need to have a long discussion with you about what happens if anything happens to you.       Hi guys. @VWatchie Those images are self hosted (not hosted on this server). Do a look at the page source and you will see this. I’m afraid, I can’t have control or backup images not hosted on this server. ( They seem to be served from here: https://qehvsw.bn.files.1drv.com/) This server is backed up fully every night and the database is backed up and versioned every hour, all stored off site on Amazon S1 platform. It’s hard for us to lose data. Ive got a huge overhead of space on this particular server the site is served from so no worries there 🙂 Sorry all for lack of response so far, I have been extremely busy and am embarrassed to say that priorities had to be set in place for a while.  Be assured that i’ve got constant monitoring and alerts should the site be in an extended problematic state (down etc) and work on these issues if they arise.
