Hi Everyone, thanks in advance

I have Caravelle N8 mechanical watch, 7 jewels, the problem it has is that its second hand kicks back couple of times during 1 minute which is causing it to fall behind in time. What can be the underlying cause ?

Fault at third wheel. ( minute)

Clean and inspect all ( gear teeth and pinion) of the  minute wheel under high magnification. There is a slight possibility of bent pivot or damaged pivot hole,  enlarged pivot hole cause depthing and exacerbate the condition.

if not periodic within min, chek escape wheel too.

Hi  I think the need for a service and inspection is required as per Nucejoes comment  is in order to determine the problem. Do you happen to know the movement make and caliber numbers.     Cheers

N8 is not the caliber it's the date code (N for the decade, 1970's, and 8 for the year number, so 1978).

Are there any marks in the main plate underneath the balance wheel?

This is a french made movement so I suspect it's an FE, possibly a 140-C

kicking back is mainly associated with escape teeth, but is easier to start observing from the third wheel, then you can identify which tooth on escape wheel and observe that is repeats periodically on the EXACT same tooth, mark a tooth of escape wheel you suspect with ink and  if it repeats more than once during one full turn of the third wheel, the fault is on escape teeth or pivot, if doesn't  repeated on exact same tooth, it can be due to faulty pivot holes at fork and escape , if only once and exact same place the fault is on the minute wheel.

Good luck.
