I serviced this Asian 7750 movement in the video below. I’m seeing some large fluctuations in amplitude on the timegrapher, largest swing is around 300 - 250 then back up to around 280 and then to 300.

Im seeing some variables in rate on the timegrapher but measuring the time against a digital clock dial up its +2 seconds max over 24hr. The pattern is like a sine wave but not so extreme.

 

Heres the video. It’s best to speed it up by 1.5x I think. As the camera changes angle that’s 15 hours later.

Any help understanding this pattern appreciated.

Not 100% sure what you’re referring to but the timegrapher test period is set to 12s. Thanks

if you look at the PDF which I've attached number eight and number 14 show variations like you have. Unfortunately you do not have a paper tape machine like the diagram shows. In other words in the old days you let a lot of paper tape spit out the machine and then measure between the peaks and see when they occur. If it's a repeatable pattern as rodabod is suggesting above you can trace it to a particular part. Also as that's a chronograph do not run the chronograph when you're doing the timing that would just add to the complexity of the problem.

try changing the sample time to something shorter because it's doing a running average it's hard to tell at least looking at the numbers they jump too much because it's averaging. It definitely looks like a powertrain fluctuation something is possibly binding up and then releasing but it's hard to tell.

Presumably you are seeing the fluctuation repeat itself with a consistant rate, if the rate corresponds to period of any wheel in the train, you should revise the suspected wheel. 

Five test periods go by in 60 seconds, 5(12 seconds)= 60 seconds.

I think that is what rodabod talking about.

Yes, I’m referring to the period of the cycle. And I’m not going to calculate that for someone else.

John, 
paper tape machines of the good old days are not necessarily needed to detect wave periods of any length.

I use this in my workshop:

I found that more often teeth are guilty than wheels out of round.

Personally what I really like is this from work much nicer than paper tape. The problem is pointing out it's really hard to look at the liquid crystal screen over multiple screens and see trends. Even sometimes in the old paper tape days was hard to see things is the timing machines are really meant to be doing that you need a different function. Like the image attached that's a really nice function unfortunately it's on a really expensive timing machine.

    • I own too many WW lathes, as well as two sherline lathes and a sherline mill with a cnc indexing rotary table. The majority of my experience is using the WW lathes to make staffs, screws, and stems. Recently, I have been experimenting making a pinion on the mill using the indexing table. It works. So, if you want to cut wheels, get the Sherline mill and indexing table...imho
    • That's strange. I re-serviced a couple of watches after about 4-5 years and there looked to be no loss of oil. These are watches I very rarely wear, and I probably over-oiled a bit back then. 
    • That's nice! Cousins do know how to make money in a way that benefits themselves and their customers. Repairing wouldn't be the same w/o them. For most purposes, 10ml goes a long way. However, with a few exceptions, I’ve started applying Fixodrop to all parts that come into contact with grease or oil, so I went ahead and got the 100ml bottle. I just serviced a watch that I last worked on seven years ago, and to my surprise, it was practically dry—almost no oil left. I suppose it either evaporates or migrates over time? I just now browsed the available options and noticed that Fixodrop 8981 ES/BS-10 (Ready to Use) is a bargain at just £104 per 100ml. Well, that is, compared to Fixodrop 8982 ES/BS-20 (Ready to Use), which goes for £850 per 100ml. According to ChatGPT, 8981 is intended for inexpensive watches serviced by enthusiasts, while 8982 is geared toward high-end timepieces handled by professionals. Or could it be that Moebius found a way to squeeze more money out of the same product? Hmm...
    • Often times the belief is when you're making small parts you Need a small lathe like a watchmaker's lathe to make small parts. But for gear cutting its oftentimes better to have something bigger. Then realistically you might end up with several things not just one machine for everything. Depends upon your machining skills and the equipment you have. This is where having a slightly bigger equipment allows you to make all kinds of things where if you have a tiny equipment you can not really make bigger stuff it's very awkward. Then indexing is all kinds of ways to do indexing a very popular way is with the stepping motor a worm gear like at the link below https://www.ebay.com/itm/191714031261 What's interesting with something like this is you can micro step at end up with basically a infinite quantity of indexing. But you still have to build some things. For instance here's an interesting YouTube channel and an interesting video. His watchmaker's lathe is a little bigger than what I'm typically used to for watchmakers lathe. As a rather interesting cross slide and notice he makes just about everything. Then he gets the indexing something purchased surplus but it's basically just a worm gear stepping motor his has way more hands-on control but it does the exact same thing as the one up above. Then if you read the description of the video is in a shop of creative people to build all kinds of nifty things like the stepper motor controller etc.      
    • Yes they are a silly price. Fortunately the 10ml Moebius bottle has a metal gauze in the top, so no need for a separate bottle. They shouldn't be!  Mad idea. I changed them for coloured ones
