Hello, I'm new here. I like the idea, but use an old balance from a junk/parts watch to test it out. I'm of the impression that the idea will work well, as long as it runs true enough.

So following ideas above I repeated but only hardened the tip of the pawl then tempered the whole lot to pale blue. This was fine and the ratchet is now working. as I was able to rivet without breaking it. Scale build up control was very helpful as I find polishing steel slow work so the less I have to do the better!

I have one and really like it. I clean it in warm soapy water and dry with a lint free rag which makes it good as new again.

This would be a cheat (or compromise, at least), but easily removable with a solvent if/when you get the authentic silvering materials: https://theartistwarehouse.com.au/buy-art-supplies-online/painting/paint-accessories/amaco-rub-n-buff/ Look for Silver Leaf in the pulldown list. The full silvering kits do appear to be available at a reasonable price on ebay australia - eg: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/252488151588
