I'm having a pig of a time with my first rebuild.

the barrel arbor has a larger diameter than the centre coil of the mainspring and I just can't get it to sit down in position and engage the spring and pop through the case hole enabling me to get the barrel closed.

Are there any tricks of the trade someone could tell me about here?

I must have watched Mark's film of him doing it 20 times now and I can't see that he has this problem in the slightest.

It's the Seiko 5 7009A still.

thanks!

Tim

I use a small pin vice to hold the arbour tightly.

This lets me manipulate it easily into place by pushing the arbour in at a slight angle while slightly turning against the direction of winding. Once you have it in place, turn the arbour in the direction of winding to ensure that the hook has located properly with the spring before removing the pin vice and closing the barrel. :)

Here is the picture ,there are different diameters, but i have bought one and use it for all modern movements

Thanks for posting Emso. :)

Having seen it I can't help but think a pin vice does exactly the same and can also cope with other things as well.

I was asking in another post what were the most useful diameters, but never got an answer...maybe this is a good time to ask again?

Nice Geo, thank you for the picture. I figure I may as well start collecting them. My pin vise is frustrating at best sometimes and it is no good for holding arbors!

Cheers,

The pin vice will scar the barrel arbor, the barrel arbor has a hole in the middle which will not svar the arbor, if scared you will have wear on the barrel where it touches the arbor and possibly a weak amplitude

I do it this way all the time and haven't marked one, the hardened steel of the arbors are very resistant to damage.
