Other than the asking price?   Sheesh.  Have one like it waiting for a service.  Guess I should get it out and go through it!  That would buy a lot of new toys.  Well -

I wonder which of the things offend you?

Except the price.

Can it be the badly refurbished watch case…

Or the bad engraving added to the case back…

Or the Hour and Minute hands…

Or the refurbished dial…

The straps and pins are new but that might be expected.
The watch movement looks OK around 1944.

Can’t wait to see the reason why you get offended ?.

I would say the last part of the engraving looks as if it has been added later or is due to the angel of the light shining onto the back.

It is also a poor movement.

Is somebody making fake cases for these?  Mine is plated brass with a 17J 641 movement.

The case back is totally wrong on the ebay picture.  Other than that, I know little of the history.

Oops!  I feel another project coming!

This time of year, O.H., I tend to stay away from the bench due to all the flying spring shed

of cat hair!

I think  you pretty much got them all, although I think the hands are correct and I don't think the dial is refinished, just not the correct dial for a military issue 580.

All my references do not show the hint of the 6 that is present on the dial on the watch, so I don't think its the correct dial.

I have a whole box of NOS spare parts for Elgin Military watches but have yet to manage to get myself a watch to work on, mainly because 90% of all the watches I see are like this one. I just want an honest original one that needs some TLC.
