Seem like the pallet fork is not in place correctly, hopefully it has not been damaged by the mishap. Its correct working should have been tested right after installing it.

the pallet fork seemed ok and engaged with the escape wheel and the balance and spun for a while before stopping. i will check that JDM thanks.by the way the photos posted were taken before i stripped it down!

I may have misunderstood what you meant by "everything moves". So it's not like  it spins like crazy when wound.

If it ran for a while it may still barely move if you touch the balance wheel with a toothpick. In these very common cases something may be rubbing, or otherwise wrong in the area of hairspring, balance, escapement.

Is it in beat?

not got that far yet.what i meant previously is that the wheel train motion works etc all moved whether the stem was in or out even though the keyless clicked back and forth as they should. nothing is spinning out of control.maybe i should go back in and start again!

Check that the set lever is in the slot. also the set lever could be upside down, ie the side that faces up now should be facing down.  If you took some pics while pulling it apart that would help check if you got it wrong.

Also observe how the set-lever moves when you pull the crown, it should move smartly with no 'sticking'. On some watches (not sure if it applies to this movement) one of the bridge screws (from the other side) is shorter in the area where the set-lever goes. If the wrong screw is used it will interfere with the movement of the set-lever or stem release.

Good luck
