Hi All

I have a Junghans J98 that came without a balance. Have purchased three balances for it now and on all of them the impulse jewel is about 140 degrees from where it should be. They’re were sourced from different places so am assuming this is a fault in their manufacture. Can’t for the life of me work out what’s going on. I assume I could reposition the hairspring or roller? Seems odd to buy a genuine part and have to do that though.  Anyone replaced a J98 balance and can help me with what to do here please ?

Hi In view of the fact you have received three the same I would be inclined to move the balance spring/collet to re position the roller to the correct location.

It's unlikely the watch company would deliberately manufacture faulty parts. But there could be other reasons for this? It may be possible that the balance wheel you have is the balance wheel that should go in the watch but it wasn't configured for your watch? In other words a company like this isn't going to manufacture lots of different balance wheels conceivably they might make only one balance wheel for the lot of their watches possibly. So the balance wheel could conceivably go into other watches even though the link below indicates it only goes in three watches which are all variations of yours.

So basically a watches just grossly out of beat providing it actually is the right balance wheel.

Fall the suggestion has made above and just put the watch in beat and see what happens.

Many thanks for the responses. Have since purchased a balance for a J98/1 (curiosity got the better of me) and that also has the impulse jewel offset! I’ll reposition the spring as suggested - should work just fine then.
