I am seeking advice on something I have never come across before.

I recently had a new battery fitted in my Omega Seamaster quartz 1342 and the second hand is going around at almost twice the speed it should. The watch has a great deal of sentimental value and I would very much like to keep it working. Is this likely to be a replacement movement or something that can be fixed. I would really appreciate any advice offered.

TIA for any help.

Go to Dr ranfft's site to see how Omega 1342 looks.

You can just google:       Omega 1342 ranfft

Your watch was probably fitted with a battery of wrong voltage and best be removed.

What battery was fitted before? Your watch is supposed to work fine with a standard silver oxide battery.

Since mercury batteries are not available anymore, isn't possible to fit a "right voltage" battery.

Personally I think that fitting any other movement to your watch just to see the hands moving would destroy it, not just in monetary value but more importantly in the intangible property of correctness.

Hi Ranfft quotes 388 battery but these are not listed in Cousins lists, It seems the thing to do is fit a 329 and use a converter ring for the correct fit, both available at cousins uk.   check the correct battery was fitted .        cheers.

Thank you Nucejoe I will remove the battery fitted and try to get the correct one.

Thankyou Watchweasol, I will try to get hold of a 329.

battery voltage doesn't usually affect quartz watches their control speed wise by a quartz crystal. When the battery gets low on some watches you'll see the secondhand jump two seconds but at a two second interval to indicate their having a low battery voltage problem.

I think retrofitting another movement unless it's the same movement would be a big mistake. Replacement movements are more commonly available for modern watches there are no replacement movements for this. Unless you can find another one of these watches in better condition.

then you said you recently had a battery put in what was the watch doing before you put the new battery in?

to understand why you need the movement ring and a different battery I'm attaching a PDF. They switched from Mercury batteries to silver batteries. A lot of the Mercury battery sizes do not correspond with silver cell sizes. So they just need an adapter ring the fix that problem. But as you can see Omega recommends silver cell shouldn't be a problem.

I'm also attaching an image of the specifications for your watch.

As mentioned above the difference in voltage between old mercury batteries and silver oxide should not affect quartz watches, optionally an adapter ring ring can provide a better physical fit.

However for cases where the exact voltage is important someone made also voltage converter adapter.  I am mentioning this for completness only not because it should be needed.
