Just came across this site on the tube.  Especially interesting is the 'Antikythea project'.  Replicates an ancient mechanism basically using hand tools and materials of the age when it was first made. Does use some modern tools but only on the basis that they are used where old hand tools would have been used but just take too long for a modern video.  The skill and ingenuity is exceptional and the trials and tests done to determine what was used in the past is very interesting.  A series of videos covers the whole project.  Well worth a look at if you interested in clock-making etc.

I watched that as it was happening. Pretty inspiring. I picked up an 1877 edition of The Practical Machinist (I think that's what it is called) masquerading as an old bible at a thrift store while it was happening, and gained a further appreciation for antiquarian metalworking technologies.
