Update for anyone that hasn’t been put to sleep by my continued post.
I finished the black watch and had been happily wearing it, but something wasn’t right. So I made some adjustments to the dial design, and at the same time decided to try some more colours.

Decided on making a gilt relief dial in the blue and I think it’s a vast improvement. Please let me know your thoughts?
I’ll probably keep posting until someone tells me to shut up, so if the thread is getting a little tired please also let me know.

Your work does you credit.  I like the blue one, it has that timeless appeal and I think will always be in fashion like the black. Keep up the great work.

Thank you. That’s all the encouragement I needed. I’ll nickname it the Weasol.
The OROLUX Weasol is done!

Ha  Ha   I like that,  how about "The Weasol Watch Co"   No thats going a bit too far.   But I like the simplicity and un fussy style it is to me classic.  When you look at it it tells you the time, its prime function without complication.      like I said  Clsaaic.             cheers

Had a bit of a play this afternoon with trying to achieve a spun dial finish (rather dangerously I fear). It inspired me to adapt an old design, and try something new. Comments and criticism are gratefully accepted as usual.
Once again these are ‘fast and dirty’ proof of concept creations.

Hi  They may be down and dirty proofs but they are still quality, I have seen watches sold with worse finishes than those for sure. I would like to see your finished article if those are proofs.  Classic, clean and simple.

Thank you once again for the kind words watchweasol. I’m currently collecting supplies to start a finished watch. May need to spend some time improving my enamelling technique first tho!
As soon as I finish something, you guys will be the first to know.

The Orolux ‘Mil-spec’ (working title, lol) has arrived! I can’t believe how excited I am! I know it’s very similar to every other military inspired watch out there, but this one is mine (guess the military film reference). And I’m pretty sure most modern mass produced military watches don’t have an enamel dial.

I liked the last watch so much I decided to try a version for the 6498. Just finished reshaping and painting the hands. I really like them without the lume for this dial. With or without lume? Answers on a postcard.

Hi   they are looking good  The hands  would suit either  lume or not My preference  no lume,  I think the case suits the style and a flat crystal to keep it slim.  The only issue I would have is with the second hand whilst very cleverly done I think a plain one would be better as the current one takes the eye away from the actual watch. Again my preference alone, others will have a different opinion I am sure.  Bur a cracking job well done.

I very much appreciate your opinion watchweasol, and believe I completely agree with you. With a clear head brought about by a new day it’s easier to be objective. I’ve already ordered a flat crystal as well as one with a slight dome to try out. I think this will make the watch much more wearable. After measuring the height of the hand stack I reckon I could fit a flat crystal as well as removing 1.5mm from the bezel height. I think this will transform the watch. As much as it pains me to say it I agree with you regarding the seconds hand too. It just doesn’t suit the watch.
I’ve actually found a case for sale in Japan that fits a 6498 and is only 40mm in diameter and 11mm thick. It’s expensive but looks top quality. I’m very tempted to give it a try. As I get older 44mm feels just too large!

Just so watchweasol doesn’t think I’ve forgotten about him, here are some progress photos. Bezel has been slightly reshaped, the case has been refinished, the seconds hand has been changed, and it has a new flat glass. Total watch thickness now down to 11.5mm. Much better.

Hi  The lowered crystal and the changed second hand do the business looks very professional, nice and clean and the second hand change (Matching the hands ) blends nicely and doesn't take the eye away from the dial as did the aeroplane.  as class act  I like it very much.

    • I put the original broken glass (whats left of it) behind the acrylic. This is how it originally looked like. A cheap clock but I like it. Very noisy when the alarm comes wake up guaranteed! 🙂
    • If at all possible, find a service guide for the automatic movements your work on, because the lubrication procedures may have different requirements or rely on oils you would not use in a manual wind train (in addition to the braking grease you mentioned). Some autos like older Seikos do not have a manual wind option, so the procedure of letting down the mainspring without being able to use the crown may require a screwdriver in the ratchet wheel screw and great care. Do you have an auto movement you were planning to start with?
    • I am an amateur, so there's that. I do not get fixated on amplitude, lift angles, and beat error. However, 4.8ms would bug me if it were my watch. But you must judge your own skills to appreciate the possibility of going backward. I suggest, that you button it up let your friend enjoy the watch for now. As your skills progress, come back to it and correct it. I assume that this watch has a fixed hairspring pin. Some modern watches have an adjustable pin along with adjustable regulator. These are trivial to get in beat. I own a valjoux 726 my dad gave me on my 18th birthday (a looooong time ago). I broke the ratchet wheel with an aggressive wind 4 yrs ago. I have been waiting for my skills to progress before doing a service. I am close. Your advice is well placed and I will apply it.
    • I didn’t find any anomaly to the left of the red mark…reflection? this is the balance in its pivot in the inverted assembly. i can’t see any obvious kinks  and the spring is flat as far as I can see. Either the stud screw is missing, or it’s glued in… I don’t know. I’m loathe to fiddle with it. Any further insights? Thanks!
    • Update!  I've dismantled it, cleaned all the glue off, and rebuilt and lubricated the base movement. I'll leave the chrono part for another day. It's running well - great amplitude and keeping time, but it's got a beat error of 4.8ms.    How important is it to correct this? I'm worried that the potential for making things worse having to take the hairspring off and on repeatedly to adjust this. Would anyone here accept it at that?
