I want to try setting my own jewels, so I purchased a Seitz tool.  I only realized after receiving it that it was missing a part.

Is my research correct in that the metal plunger tube thing with the rounded top that the lever presses against is called the "spindle"?

If so, where can I source a new one of these?  I was able to find someone selling a spindle, but I don't know if these come in different shapes and sizes.

I know it'll need a spring as well, but do you think this would be a compatible replacement for my tool?  If you are uncertain, what should I check on my tool, and what questions should I ask the seller to be sure?

Isn't the hole in the side of the tray only for the spindle for the reaming tool? The mushroom head of the pusher spindle would not fit in there.

I think there are two types of spindle for the pushers.  The newer style has a removable head and can be used with a micrometer attachment.  That tool looks like an old one and would use the once piece spindle, like the spindle in your pictures.  I think both kinds of spindles are the same size anyway, and both use 4mm pushers, and are probably compatible.

It appears cousins have stopped selling the spare spindles.

If your set doesn’t have any pushers then you may still be cheaper buying a complete set rather than furnishing your current set.

Ah yes, that's right.

The spindles are 8mm diameter, same as Favorite, Chatons SA, and Horia. Horia is still going and sells the spindles individually; they have both keyed and non-keyed (they call it "furrow"), the Seitz takes a keyed spindle but will work with non-keyed, just back out the locating screw. Horia has the spring too. You have to specify 3mm or 4mm hole, and they have 3 lengths; Seitz is 76mm total length, their longest is 74mm, which should work fine.

Hi everyone. Thanks for the responses. I'm glad to hear that the spindle on ebay could be a suitable replacement.  Since the holidays are coming up, I won't be starting any new projects till after the new year, so I'll try my luck on getting the spindle for cheap on ebay.

I think the kit @GregG bought only came with reamers to it might be pointless getting the pusher spindle anyway.

I encountered an identical issue a couple months back.

I emailed Dave from Dave's Watch Parts and he had at least one spare but from his response sounded like more than one, cost $20 plus shipping if I remember correctly.

I'd give him a try if I were you.

    • If at all possible, find a service guide for the automatic movements your work on, because the lubrication procedures may have different requirements or rely on oils you would not use in a manual wind train (in addition to the braking grease you mentioned). Some autos like older Seikos do not have a manual wind option, so the procedure of letting down the mainspring without being able to use the crown may require a screwdriver in the ratchet wheel screw and great care. Do you have an auto movement you were planning to start with?
    • I am an amateur, so there's that. I do not get fixated on amplitude, lift angles, and beat error. However, 4.8ms would bug me if it were my watch. But you must judge your own skills to appreciate the possibility of going backward. I suggest, that you button it up let your friend enjoy the watch for now. As your skills progress, come back to it and correct it. I assume that this watch has a fixed hairspring pin. Some modern watches have an adjustable pin along with adjustable regulator. These are trivial to get in beat. I own a valjoux 726 my dad gave me on my 18th birthday (a looooong time ago). I broke the ratchet wheel with an aggressive wind 4 yrs ago. I have been waiting for my skills to progress before doing a service. I am close. Your advice is well placed and I will apply it.
    • I didn’t find any anomaly to the left of the red mark…reflection? this is the balance in its pivot in the inverted assembly. i can’t see any obvious kinks  and the spring is flat as far as I can see. Either the stud screw is missing, or it’s glued in… I don’t know. I’m loathe to fiddle with it. Any further insights? Thanks!
    • Update!  I've dismantled it, cleaned all the glue off, and rebuilt and lubricated the base movement. I'll leave the chrono part for another day. It's running well - great amplitude and keeping time, but it's got a beat error of 4.8ms.    How important is it to correct this? I'm worried that the potential for making things worse having to take the hairspring off and on repeatedly to adjust this. Would anyone here accept it at that?
