Hi, Folks:

A quick question about the Arnex Hunter 17j Incabloc I am finishing with an ETA 6498 movement. . Apparently there is some obscure piece-- perhaps a small bit of tube-- that the winding stem goes through as I insert it into the movement during casing. Without this obscure piece I am unable to open the front of the Hunter case. Not altogether sure what I am dealing with, here, in fact not only can I not find it in any watch diagrams, I can't even find mention of it or a term for it. I am only aware that I am missing something due to the loss of my ability to open the case.  Does this resonate with anyone?

Best Wishes,

Bruce

Without pictures and a more detailed explanation of the problem it's impossible to help or even understand what do you mean.

Yes it's a tube. It fits over the stem and pushes on the inside of the case so you can open the front I don't think it's a standard size for all of them.

This tube? It should be easy enough to make or have someone make for you - I found a guy on eBay to make bits and pieces before I got my lathe.

You should be able to go to a hobby or craft store and find some brass tubing. It's not really a lathe project a lathe would be nice to make nice smooth ends but not really necessary.

One can do things like that with a rotary tool that use collets or a small chuck, held with a bench or vise support, a set of needle files, emery cloth, and small drills bits.

The other item that can almost replace a lathe is a jeweller motor. There are ER11 collet chucks that can directly fit to the spindle https://www.aliexpress.com/item/33009204061.html

Having a motor is especially recommended also because it makes polishing jobs so much easier.

Thanks so much. It probably evaporated when I first pulled the stem out. I foresee a trip to Hobby Lobby in my future for a bit of stock. Actually it should be fun making the bit for myself. Thanks again.

Best Wishes,

Bruce
