Hi Clockmakers and Apprentices,

i "accidentally" bought a longcase clock without actually knowing what I was about to buy, i just bid on it and noone bid on me. Purchase price was £550 +20 %. I am a bit anxious now, not sure how to fit into the house and how to tell the family. What are your thoughts?

Did the description say it was Flemish. I'd like to see the movement to see if it has dutch striking.

Yes this was the description of it: "An early 20th century Flemish carved oak and walnut longcase clock, height 240cms." nothing more nothing less.

Case has three pieces, still in the car. Maybe I smuggle them in one by one? 🙂 Took a few pics about the movement, does not tell me a lot to be honest. It probably did not run in the last few years/decades so it needs a service/restoration probably. I have the pendulum and the weights but they do not seem to be in a good shape. One little acorn is broken off from the case but it is going to be easy to turn a new one, not sure how I will match the color though or what shall i do to the case in general. Going to take other pics once it stops raining.

The detail on the case is amazing!  As  historical as it is artistic. The lady's dress, and the cut of the neckline, and the way she pins up her kerchief on her hair.  The drop spindle she's spinning wool with.  And the fellow to the right of the dial, he has those blousy kind of britches and wooden shoes, and tall spats.  And the door down below with the man carved upon it, working out of doors.  And the crest just above that.  There's enough detail you could approximate both where and when this clock was from.  I do costuming and historical re-enactment, so while I would know little about this kind of clock movement, I saw the people and details in the carving, and it's like reading a history book.

Nice to see the dial in good condition even if it is plain. The hands are original. The movement is what I expected to see and no it hasn't got dutch striking. It looks as if it has a dead beat escapement but the photos don't show a good close up so I'm just judging this by the shape of the pallets. Does it have a plain pendulum or one of these decorative types like this.

I am going to take pics about the movement tomorrow when there is light. I got a plain folding pendulum where the piece with the hook is missing unfortunately, i have to make one and rivet it together with the existing piece. The rod was/is also very rusty cleaned up a little bit, and I am not sure about the nut at the end of the pendulum. I doubt that it is original seems like somebody forced one into its place was difficult to remove it. Something is rattling inside the pendulum, i hope its a gold coin. 🙂

Example of the pendulum from eBay:

There was a layer of glossy paint all over the place which made the surface uneven as it was sometime too think or non existent. The top plate was also painted with it, including screws and brass parts. I assume it was not original. I sanded scraped it off. In the other hand rust was poking through this paint so i think this paint protected the frame in a certain extent and the damage would have been greater without it. I dont know if it was originally painted or not, it might have had a thin layer of black paint, but the plates probably were heat treated and immersed in oil? It is only my impression not sure about it. Shall I go and spray a mat thin layer of industrial black paint on it? (after plugging the holes)

Nice work. It will look nice when all the other parts are cleaned and new lines fitted.

Could you please give me some advice for the lines? Where and what to buy? I noticed that the time train had red and the other one had white line? Is that common?

Half of the parts are cleaned, a bit of laborious work to clean all of these wheels tooth by tooth and they have many, spent a few hours with them.

And these are my heavy weight champions. They seemed to be black and also had some paper stick to them showing nothing now. The hooks are a bit flat... i don't like them. If I heat up the top cover with my torch would the top bit come off?

    • HWGIKE#57 Valex FEF 190 15 jewels Swiss lever full service and repair This one was waiting for a balance staff replacement in my cabinet parts and case cleaned up with a new balance staff and a 4th wheel as the original 4th wheel had a broken pivot for the off center second hand. I never attempted a balance staff replacement before however I received a Bergeon Molfres (i was hunting it for about 2 years) and with the help of it I managed to remove the old staff and riveted the new one in. It also received a new MS, crystal and the hole for the MS arbor was also tightened. With the new MS now it has an acceptable performance meaning that the amplitude goes up to 280 fully wound, has an acceptable beat error and I have the two nice lines but only dial up, dial down is not as nice and I could not figure out as why. I have the two lines but the amplitude is dropping to around 230 and the lines are a bit hairy. Both dial up and dial down the lines just go up and down without seemingly any pattern. I cleaned the movement two times, and then a 3rd time pegged out the main plate and train bridge holes but made no change. Both the HS collet and the roller table was too lose on the new staff... I did not count how many times I took the balance cock off to sort out the HS collet, the roller table and the beat error, somebody before me also shortened the HS by pushing it out a bit and it seems every time somebody is messing with the end of the HS the protruding bit is most of the time twisted bent etc. This one was probably one of the most challenging repair and service. I might take the new MS out and clean it lubricate it as I just pushed the new one in to the barrel from the retaining ring. Plus started to re-read the theory of the escapement and how to analyse the graph on the timing machine: Greiner Chronografic Record manual. I am also thinking to put the watch on a 24 hour long run with the eTimer SW it once helped me to figure out what was wrong with a watch. There is an interesting part of the Greiner record manual talking about the pallets and the end shake of the balance and pallet staff. Maybe this is my issue? Who could that possibly identify? After a few years now I am still without a clue how could watchmakers make parts I can only see with my microscope or how could/can they carry out complicated services impossible to do.. real magic..... .... ..... before I sent this post while the pics were uploading I had an idea, i was browsing the possible outcomes on the timing machine I had one for magnetism..... so I demagnetized the movement and it is not hairy now.... two really nice lines 0.2 ms beat error still a bit wavy, but a lot lot better..... argh....
    • Hi there, welcome here.
    • yes the advertising revenue should generate money. The question is how much money? Then as far as the cost of the website goes that's relatively easy to determine? all you would have to do to grasp costs and profitability would be to go to the link below and you can actually get a website for free try it out for free I believe you get no advertising initially. They also talk about that they'll help you out they have marketing tools and some sort of paid subscription or something. So I guess were shopping for a whatever just ask them what would a maybe could use this one as an example in other words it's going to look basically identical to this is going to have advertising a paid subscriptions what's it going to cost? After all they want to sell or give us a message board like this they should bill answer the questions as they're the people who did the software for this. Yes they really said you can have a free discussion group at least to start. https://invisioncommunity.com/ I was curious about the monthly supporter thing where exactly do we find that on this message board? A quick search I'm not finding it so obviously I'm not looking in the right place?
    • Help me out here, but with all the advertising on this site (which I don't mind) wouldn't it pay for itself or even make money for the owner ???
