Hello everyone!

I have some questions about what fluids to use in my cleaning machine. I have an Elma Super Elite and I am a little questioned about what fluids to use for the three cleaning stages.

At the moment, I am using an Elma rinse as first clean (which I know is completely wrong), then distilled water and then IPA. I need to replace the first fluid which should be a cleaning solution and I would also appreciate some advice on the two rinses.

Price isn't a huge problem and I have the option to have the cleaner in a well ventilated area if needed. I service almost exclusively vintage watches. Some Zenith, Omega, Rolex, Certina and everything else.

I was thinking of getting the L&R extra fine as the cleaning, then using distilled water and IPA as the two rinses. Does anyone have any tips for improvement or does anyone think it's a bad combo for any reason?

If it's a bad combo, what would you suggest??

Huge thanks for all the help(:

I just remember, I am using the Elma Suprol Pro Rinse as the cleaning. Would it be a good combo to get the L&R ultra fine, use the suprol pro as first rinse and IPA as second rinse.

I know the shellac on pallet forks is pretty sensitive to some solutions. Are there any parts I should be weary about placing in the cleaner?

It's extremely important to use the appropriate solutions the way they were designed. If you using water-based cleaner which are not then you can rinse with water. But if you're using the non-water-based I'm not really sure what would happen with water but it is not approved at all.

If you actually look at the cleaning process when done correctly. The first solution the so-called cleaning solution has additional properties that cause things to go in the solution like lubrication. So it's purpose is to put everything into the solution and off of the plates gears whatever. Then the rinse several of them the follow up dilute the concentration of stuff in solution until the plates and everything a nice clean. It's extremely important as I said that they all be compatible.

You can leave jar 2 + 3 as is and use Elma 9:1 for cleaning in the 1st jar. This combination is approved by Elma

So in this example the first solution is a water-based cleaning solution. Then definitely water can be used as the rinse. Followed with a brief bath of Isopropyl alcohol to help to remove the water as fast as possible before going into the dryer.

The L&R ultra fine Is a good For cleaning and the rinse should work but I would really like to see two rinses not just one because you're not doing a good enough job of cleaning your Going to leave residue behind on the plates. Notice how your machine has three jars one cleaning Two separate rinse. The isopropyl alcohol is still good but you can swap one of the jars for that. Otherwise I think you just shortchanging cleaning.

The first jar cleaner, the other two jars both rinse.  I always filtered them after a time to remove the dirt. When it comes to change the last rinse becomes the first. I used filter papers that at the time you could buy from Boots chemist.

Excuse my ignorance. I use IPA as a final clean. But, due to comments, I remove any shellac contained items before this final rinse. I was under the impression that immersion in IPA for more than a couple of minutes causes damage to shellac. If you are using a machine, do you remove the shellac item mid clean, or not put them in initially?

This is just a general enquiry. Not a criticism.

Thank you

I always removed the balance complete and pallets and cleaned them in Ronsonol lighter fluid in a screw lid jar, you can leave the parts in that for as long as you like it is completely harmless to shellac. When you remove the parts put the part on some tissue paper and use your blower to dry. I used this method for years and never had any problems, just disregard what others say about Ronsonol.

Neither. It will take a couple of cleaning cycles (3 min. cold IPA rinse) to remove the shellac.

More often I find pallets without any shellac initially, then I reapply before cleaning. No big matter.

I've been using L&R and #3 rinse but I'm giving Elma 1:9/water/IPA a try. Even when I order the Elma from Cousins and have it shipped to the US there's still significant cost savings...

...and I really like oldhippy's recommendation of Ronsonal. I get the shellacked parts into the cleaning cup and just forget about them while I'm working the cleaning machine, everything comes out clean and bright, it saves me a bit of risk with shellac and IPA and I do less fiddling with the balance removed.

I'm curious, what's your experience now, comparing L&R waterless fluids with Elma 1:9/water/IPA?

No more Elma. Three step L&R in my Pearl machine and I Liquinox in the ultrasonic with an IPA rinse.

I was satisfied with the Elma regimen but pricing on L&R is recently a little better. I also do a better job of pre-rinsing now which extends the life of the L&R in the Pearl machine so I’m less concerned with the cost…

Can be used the same solution for ultrasonic machine?

if you look at the specifications for the cleaning fluids they will usually specify both.

    • Hi guys. @VWatchie Those images are self hosted (not hosted on this server). Do a look at the page source and you will see this. I’m afraid, I can’t have control or backup images not hosted on this server. ( They seem to be served from here: https://qehvsw.bn.files.1drv.com/) This server is backed up fully every night and the database is backed up and versioned every hour, all stored off site on Amazon S1 platform. It’s hard for us to lose data. Ive got a huge overhead of space on this particular server the site is served from so no worries there 🙂 Sorry all for lack of response so far, I have been extremely busy and am embarrassed to say that priorities had to be set in place for a while.  Be assured that i’ve got constant monitoring and alerts should the site be in an extended problematic state (down etc) and work on these issues if they arise.
    • Web sites are cheap. Message board are easy. Hosting both is less than 100 usd a year and small advertising would cover most of that.  In the discord group we did some 15 min poc and threw up a couple of different message boards on a domain i host.   The real value is the data / information / hive mind While I'm a rank amateur in watch repair the information and assistance on this board is invaluable. The members on here are friendly, entertaining and a wealth of knowledge This is what needs to be preserved  --Jeff

    • HWGIKE#57 Valex FEF 190 15 jewels Swiss lever full service and repair This one was waiting for a balance staff replacement in my cabinet parts and case cleaned up with a new balance staff and a 4th wheel as the original 4th wheel had a broken pivot for the off center second hand. I never attempted a balance staff replacement before however I received a Bergeon Molfres (i was hunting it for about 2 years) and with the help of it I managed to remove the old staff and riveted the new one in. It also received a new MS, crystal and the hole for the MS arbor was also tightened. With the new MS now it has an acceptable performance meaning that the amplitude goes up to 280 fully wound, has an acceptable beat error and I have the two nice lines but only dial up, dial down is not as nice and I could not figure out as why. I have the two lines but the amplitude is dropping to around 230 and the lines are a bit hairy. Both dial up and dial down the lines just go up and down without seemingly any pattern. I cleaned the movement two times, and then a 3rd time pegged out the main plate and train bridge holes but made no change. Both the HS collet and the roller table was too lose on the new staff... I did not count how many times I took the balance cock off to sort out the HS collet, the roller table and the beat error, somebody before me also shortened the HS by pushing it out a bit and it seems every time somebody is messing with the end of the HS the protruding bit is most of the time twisted bent etc. This one was probably one of the most challenging repair and service. I might take the new MS out and clean it lubricate it as I just pushed the new one in to the barrel from the retaining ring. Plus started to re-read the theory of the escapement and how to analyse the graph on the timing machine: Greiner Chronografic Record manual. I am also thinking to put the watch on a 24 hour long run with the eTimer SW it once helped me to figure out what was wrong with a watch. There is an interesting part of the Greiner record manual talking about the pallets and the end shake of the balance and pallet staff. Maybe this is my issue? Who could that possibly identify? After a few years now I am still without a clue how could watchmakers make parts I can only see with my microscope or how could/can they carry out complicated services impossible to do.. real magic..... .... ..... before I sent this post while the pics were uploading I had an idea, i was browsing the possible outcomes on the timing machine I had one for magnetism..... so I demagnetized the movement and it is not hairy now.... two really nice lines 0.2 ms beat error still a bit wavy, but a lot lot better..... argh....
