This will be a gift for my brother in-law, assuming I can get it working.

Case requires some work and a new crystal, but the dial looks in great condition

Internals look clean enough, and balance/hairspring looked a lot better once I removed it - but still may need some tweaking (always my Achilles heel).

All stripped and ready for cleaning.

Pretty watch. Interesting to see that these inexpensive watches use a Breguet hairspring. One thing made me scratch my head though. Where's the regulating arm? 🤔

Watch cleaned and re-assembled, less the balance which I need to fix/replace and the hour wheel and dial washer which fall off without the dial in place. I couldn't save the original chrome plating so had to take off the old chrome from the case so I can nickle plate - just needs a good clean and final buff/polish before starting the plating process....

With regards to the crown, this seems to be part of the stem and not screwed on, or maybe I can't see any of the threads. I tried to unscrew it but didn't use much torque in case I broke it. Does anyone know if these watches use a one piece crown-stem or is the crown removable like a normal watch?

I don't know, but I've never seen or heard about any system where the crown and stem are a single piece. Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised if you'd be able to find a replacement on eBay.

What did you use to take off the old chrome? I believe there are several videos and posts showing nickel plating, but still, I'd be interested to hear how you go about it.

I used a felt buffing wheel to take out the scratches and dings, when complete about half the chrome plate was gone, so I continued to use the felt wheel to remove the bulk of the rest. Finished off with polishing sticks. Will use the polish wheel and polishing compound before a good clean and then ultrasonic bath before plating.

FAILURE!

😭

After an hour trying to fix the balance only to discover that the staff pivot was broken (should have spotted this sooner!), and then looking at 3 donor movements all with equally damaged balances this watch is getting relegated to the donor pile - pitty, but this is reminiscent of my other Russian watch experiences. I think my next project will qualify for the 404 club!

      Smiths rim wind and set

      Ok, as per pictures I have a smiths rim set and wind on the bench, swimming in oil but all sorted. The fault I have is the mainspring bridle has lost its tab/notch/hook, like a hebdomas pocket watch the mainspring is fitted to a bridal in the barrel which slides around on full wind onto 4 notches in the barrel wall, thus stopping damage to the mainspring by over enthusiastic winding. So my questiion is this, what is the best way to create another hook in the bridal, my thoughts are along the same lines as making a new hole in the mainspring end, annealing etc, but what and how to make the hook?? I have a pair of barrel hook pliers that work great in soft brass but won’t even scratch the bridal, what I don’t want to do is whack a hole into it and not have a hook. the pictures are of the bridal ( broken) and a hebdomas ( complete ) incase you are wondering what I’m on about. And a few of the serivce. Thanks for any advise.

      Decided to give the case and bracelet a good cleaning and my first shot at polishing/brushing. Went with the Cape Cod polishing cloth and gray scotch brite method.  Before First; Then After; Then comparing to some original links from when the watch was new to now.

      It's either bent or hung up on something or both. The hexane won't hurt it, and hanging from a balance tack indefinitely won't hurt it.   If the spring is glued to the stud there's a chance that the glue was softened and the outer coil stuck to the stud. Haven't seen that happen, but I suppose it could. Don't know if hexane affects the glue used either.

      Hello all. some help required here from the community please. I serviced this movement, which was running reasonably well, but the balance spring which was running healthily before I started, after cleaning in hexane for 30 secs, is all bunched up at the stud. I did store the balalance on a tack thereafter for a day.   could the spring be strained under gravity? I demagnetised of course, and the balance is squeaky clean. some help would be much appreciated. Thanks, Tony G
