Hi Richard.  The center can is best left alone unless the pivot hole is worn then it needs removing using large levers as does the kidney cam(gathering pallet) to be correct.   A pair of levers or a puller, I use levers and have no problems.

Thanks, I've read that nitromors won't affect steel, is that true, if I leave the centre wheel and gathering pallet in place?

Hi Richard  It will remove paints, varnish Lacquers from many surfaces, I have used it on steel, wood and brass with no problems but you mut clean it all off thoroughly. I use warm soapy water then dry well to remove all moisture once done clean the clock in the normal way.

Getting there, please don't feel obliged to reply to all my posts.  I'm just excited doing my first clock.

Which varnish do I use and do I have to clean the pivot holes afterwards ? Oops forgot photos.

Hi Richard  No problem ,  I think as far as lacquer is concerned  best get the ones recommended like Horolacq (cousins). and yes you will need to peg the holes to remove any build up.

Horolacq is what I always use on French Carriage Clock movements and cases. You need to get the clear, also a nice very fine paint artist brush flat style if possible. This stuff drys very quick, be careful not to handle parts with your fingers wear finger cots if you can.

The Harris MK1 clock mainspring winder is underway, photos to follow.  So far £0 but I may have to go mad and spend £20 to finish it. Hehe.

What's the best way of cleaning the bottom/ dial side plate?  Terminology?  I usually use lighter fluid followed by IPA, it would cost a fortune, could I use petrol, followed by IPA?

Do you mean the main plate behind the dial? If yes petrol will be fine. I hope you haven't wasted your money on that mainspring winder a good one is not cheap £20 my mind boggles.

What sort of mainspring winder have you bought for £20 as oldhippy says they are not cheap, have you got the capture rings for the mainspring with it, what make is it and did you buy it from ebay?

Ok, after the conversation about quality tools!!!!

Not finished and very crude but it worked well. I attached the barrel to some wood with a plastic clip and held that in a  vise as a temporarymeasure.

The ratchet is removable and I can utilise different sizes of socket from the let down tool.

Hi Richard   well done I like the design simple yet effctive, what did you use for the retainer, it worked well.

By the way I believe the watch (Half Hunter) is by A Schild maybe a 168 ?  inported by George Stockwell  who was a major importer at the time,  more to do.

Sorry I didn't reply, I think the repair shop episode where Steve Fletcher hand wound a mainspring into the barrel, I think it was on series 12 episode 2.

    • If at all possible, find a service guide for the automatic movements your work on, because the lubrication procedures may have different requirements or rely on oils you would not use in a manual wind train (in addition to the braking grease you mentioned). Some autos like older Seikos do not have a manual wind option, so the procedure of letting down the mainspring without being able to use the crown may require a screwdriver in the ratchet wheel screw and great care. Do you have an auto movement you were planning to start with?
    • I am an amateur, so there's that. I do not get fixated on amplitude, lift angles, and beat error. However, 4.8ms would bug me if it were my watch. But you must judge your own skills to appreciate the possibility of going backward. I suggest, that you button it up let your friend enjoy the watch for now. As your skills progress, come back to it and correct it. I assume that this watch has a fixed hairspring pin. Some modern watches have an adjustable pin along with adjustable regulator. These are trivial to get in beat. I own a valjoux 726 my dad gave me on my 18th birthday (a looooong time ago). I broke the ratchet wheel with an aggressive wind 4 yrs ago. I have been waiting for my skills to progress before doing a service. I am close. Your advice is well placed and I will apply it.
    • I didn’t find any anomaly to the left of the red mark…reflection? this is the balance in its pivot in the inverted assembly. i can’t see any obvious kinks  and the spring is flat as far as I can see. Either the stud screw is missing, or it’s glued in… I don’t know. I’m loathe to fiddle with it. Any further insights? Thanks!
    • Update!  I've dismantled it, cleaned all the glue off, and rebuilt and lubricated the base movement. I'll leave the chrono part for another day. It's running well - great amplitude and keeping time, but it's got a beat error of 4.8ms.    How important is it to correct this? I'm worried that the potential for making things worse having to take the hairspring off and on repeatedly to adjust this. Would anyone here accept it at that?
