Hello all.

A colleague of mine has a Seiko 522a, the second hand jumps, stops and jumps again.  What a shock I had when I opened the case, I've never seen one like it before.  Does the rotor recharge the battery?  Is the battery defective?

Is that one of their Kinetic Seiko watches?

I have a Kinetic watch (5M42A) that has a capacitor and also that winder.  I know when the watch worked (mine needs a new capacitor) the second hand would tick every two seconds I believe when the charge was low.  Shaking it a bit to wind it would get it going and then it would tick normally.

Here is a page on the 5J22A which I believe is what it shows in your picture.

Yes, sorry missed out the J. Wasn't sure whether it needed a new battery or just charging.

well, I would try to charge it first and see how that turns out.  You could also test the capacitor as well, but I'm not exactly sure how you would do that.

Wearing it at the moment, trying to charge it, I'll see how it goes.  So far still skipping.

You may want to read the PDF for the movement as it tells you how to get this charged.  You will need to do more than just wear it to get it out of that skipping.  See 12 - 13 in the pdf linked below.  Might be a good idea to look at other areas too to get a better understanding of the movement and how it conserves energy etc.
