Any thoughts? See at 7:22 onwards and especially at 7:43

Not impressed. The Kluber P125 (or whatever it was) should be thinly spread around the barrel rim but not in the notches. When using oil (HP-1300) I prefer to lubricate the barrel bearings when the arbor and spring have been mounted and the lid has been closed. I am unsure what calibre this is but I would choose Moebius 9504 (instead of Molykote) for the barrel bearings which I believe is fairly close to Rolex's MR4 grease. Did I just start a fire!? 😱

Poor Kalle is getting ragged about, i did watch one of his videos yesterday,  first time for ages. I had to end it though he had rebank and overbank completely mixed up . I read the comments and only a couple of people had picked up on it, proves that beginners are picking up incorrect terms, not good.

I believe he always calls rebanking/knocking/galloping "overbanking". I have heard it several times.

He didn't mention rebanking at all just knocking as overbanking , which are two different terms

Haha I've been mentioned in a few of his videos, i figured the language barrier could  be the reason, it was pointed out to him a couple of times in the comments,  be good to hear kalle correct this mistake, i have a lot of respect for folk that hold thier hands up to say sorry i got something wrong.

That could be just the motivation he needs! 🙂

I like Kalle, who wouldn't, but using his homemade terminology, like "main barrel" takes a lot of focus away. I always wanted to ask him where I could find the secondary barrels😉

"knocking" isn't bad as a synonym for re-banking! The impulse pin "knocks on the door" (the outside of the fork horn).

Yes, there is a distinct and important difference so I couldn't agree more.

That would affect word order, grammar and such which is totally understandable but not terminology.

Haha, I'm probably sticking up for him now , i think he's shortened mainspring barrel to just main barrel lol, why not just barrel ? I guess alarm watches have alarm barrels ?

But again as pointed out by Klassiker,  english is not kalle's first language so allowances have to be made, but yes i like him too 🙂

Yey day at home today in my watchroom, radiator fitted in there last week so nice and cosy now. After spending all day yesterday climbing around like a monkey on scaffolding, this is heaven , the smell of coffee percolating in the corner and fresh homemade walnut and fruit loaf and its raining outside, i ask what could be better ? 🙂

No its not coffee , its camomile tea I've had my one morning coffee, i just love the smell of coffee brewing. Not trying to make anyone jealous or anything......🤔......well maybe...... just a little.....😅

Thanks for the link! Interesting!

"with an automatic winding system, it can be that there is too much graphite grease in the main barrel and that causes the spring to give extra friction to the main barrel so therefore too much pressure on the gear train" ~ Kalle Slaap

It could be that the word "over banking" in Dutch is used to describe "re-banking" and vice versa, but I doubt it. I have no problem with faulty word order, grammar and ignorance (we're all new at this at some point), but I'm relentless regarding terminology (mind you, synonyms are perfectly fine).

I suggest that we contact the police so that a trial can be held against Kalle and hopefully the court will find him guilty of this unpardonable offence and sentence him to the severest penalty under the law.

I'm the same without a standard language for watchmaking it can get confusing, in particular for beginners, 2 or 3 people advising using or 2 or 3 different names for the same part. I admit to liking the older English names and terms going back to traditional watchmaking ie. The lever ( its function ) as opposed to the pallet fork, its less spelling for starters 😄 and use pallets or even anchor ( depending on the particular part of it in question )to describe one end of the lever and fork for the other end. Sometimes its function related and other times a lookalike description .

Old books usually call it "knocking" or "galloping" due to the telltale sound it makes on a large pocket watch.

I still have difficulty when there’s an 🇬🇧english and an 🇺🇸english for the same part or an archaic term for same…

I see no problem using the term "main barrel". I use the term myself 😟

I think you are being pendantic 🤣

That raises a question for me - why don't all you UK folks spell it "barrel arbour" like you do with your "colours"? (apologies for my humo[u]r)

I often do, by mistake. Words with "ou" (colour, flavour, honour etc) are from the old French when it was the main language in England.

The differences are usually blamed on Mr Noah Webster.  " the American lexicographer. Seeking to establish American independence and identity in language, Webster implemented a number of spelling reforms in A Compendious Dictionary of the English Language, which he published in 1806".

I find it interesting the way words and pronunciation change, The one that amazes me is the spelling of Knight.  I believe the scene in Holy Grail with the French knights in the castle has the pronunciation about right  : "you silly English "cuh-nikt" "

I've been watching quite a lot of videos by this Marshall guy lately. Really awesome video and audio quality. It's also nice that he actually shows the mistakes he makes. That escape wheel pivot especially ouch. He also lubricates the escape wheel cap jewel and just drops it in, which is nice. I have tried and failed. What I don't get is that he's got a ton of  equipment and he works on really expensive watches but he doesn't use epilame. And I can't see a reason not to remove cap jewels before the cleaning cycles. All that filming and editing is really time consuming so I hope he gets compensated reasonably well.

It's a watch not a Nazi ⌚...but if you mean Jaeger using dial screws on the face side that is controversial…

No, I meant the restoration. Many people think the case and dial should of been left as is.

    • Hi guys. @VWatchie Those images are self hosted (not hosted on this server). Do a look at the page source and you will see this. I’m afraid, I can’t have control or backup images not hosted on this server. ( They seem to be served from here: https://qehvsw.bn.files.1drv.com/) This server is backed up fully every night and the database is backed up and versioned every hour, all stored off site on Amazon S1 platform. It’s hard for us to lose data. Ive got a huge overhead of space on this particular server the site is served from so no worries there 🙂 Sorry all for lack of response so far, I have been extremely busy and am embarrassed to say that priorities had to be set in place for a while.  Be assured that i’ve got constant monitoring and alerts should the site be in an extended problematic state (down etc) and work on these issues if they arise.
    • Web sites are cheap. Message board are easy. Hosting both is less than 100 usd a year and small advertising would cover most of that.  In the discord group we did some 15 min poc and threw up a couple of different message boards on a domain i host.   The real value is the data / information / hive mind While I'm a rank amateur in watch repair the information and assistance on this board is invaluable. The members on here are friendly, entertaining and a wealth of knowledge This is what needs to be preserved  --Jeff

    • HWGIKE#57 Valex FEF 190 15 jewels Swiss lever full service and repair This one was waiting for a balance staff replacement in my cabinet parts and case cleaned up with a new balance staff and a 4th wheel as the original 4th wheel had a broken pivot for the off center second hand. I never attempted a balance staff replacement before however I received a Bergeon Molfres (i was hunting it for about 2 years) and with the help of it I managed to remove the old staff and riveted the new one in. It also received a new MS, crystal and the hole for the MS arbor was also tightened. With the new MS now it has an acceptable performance meaning that the amplitude goes up to 280 fully wound, has an acceptable beat error and I have the two nice lines but only dial up, dial down is not as nice and I could not figure out as why. I have the two lines but the amplitude is dropping to around 230 and the lines are a bit hairy. Both dial up and dial down the lines just go up and down without seemingly any pattern. I cleaned the movement two times, and then a 3rd time pegged out the main plate and train bridge holes but made no change. Both the HS collet and the roller table was too lose on the new staff... I did not count how many times I took the balance cock off to sort out the HS collet, the roller table and the beat error, somebody before me also shortened the HS by pushing it out a bit and it seems every time somebody is messing with the end of the HS the protruding bit is most of the time twisted bent etc. This one was probably one of the most challenging repair and service. I might take the new MS out and clean it lubricate it as I just pushed the new one in to the barrel from the retaining ring. Plus started to re-read the theory of the escapement and how to analyse the graph on the timing machine: Greiner Chronografic Record manual. I am also thinking to put the watch on a 24 hour long run with the eTimer SW it once helped me to figure out what was wrong with a watch. There is an interesting part of the Greiner record manual talking about the pallets and the end shake of the balance and pallet staff. Maybe this is my issue? Who could that possibly identify? After a few years now I am still without a clue how could watchmakers make parts I can only see with my microscope or how could/can they carry out complicated services impossible to do.. real magic..... .... ..... before I sent this post while the pics were uploading I had an idea, i was browsing the possible outcomes on the timing machine I had one for magnetism..... so I demagnetized the movement and it is not hairy now.... two really nice lines 0.2 ms beat error still a bit wavy, but a lot lot better..... argh....
