Hi,

As part of my continuing quest to stretch myself I have decided I'd like a chronograph. Not to wear particularly, but to tinker with and teach myself how they work. I think the cheapest new one you can get is the Alpha Paul Newman, a sort of Rolex Daytona copy (but not replica, it doesn't use the name).

However I'm not concerned whether or not it is new, or even working, provided it is complete. Can anyone suggest what would be good used watches/movements to look out for? The main criteria for me would be price, as this is just something to take apart etc. The Alpha mentioned above can be got for about £110-£120, but from what I've read is not a fully functioning chronograph, one dial is false I think, so I would prefer something better. Thanks

My first chrono teardown was a Landeron 48. These are not expensive and parts are cheap (have a look at Cousins) but, you cannot buy a minute jumper spring or an Incabloc balance so make sure the watch you buy has them in good condition.

There are loads on eBay so just wait for one in your price range. Be very careful not to turn the eccentric screws when you strip it as you'll need to adjust the depthing (meshing depth of the gears) again.

Hope you get something, Chris

Here's mine. It was a bit over your budget but it is a Giroxa! No, I'd never heard of them either...

I think that's my last attempt with Tapatalk, as I realise it is uploading my images there and shrinking them. What a waste of space.
