Hi everyone.

I'm proud to share with you my new tabletop workbench and desktop organizer. I have it made by a friend who is a carpenter by using design of Ofrei's product.

Love it, and its just what I would love to own too. Is your carpenter friend open to new commissions?

Yes. He'd like to. But the shipping cost is too much to bear :(.

Shipping to Finland would be a little steep, but I don't mind paying for the shipping, I have had a gearbox for my father in laws car shipped to me from UK, cost £50 shipping.

I'll check with my friend for the cost of items. The total weight is about 10kg then I'll check freight with local courier (I'm from Vietnam)

I see some very high shipping costs if it has to travel from Vietnam... Would you just share the plans instead? If you make a digital construction plan it would be easier to sell to more people and no shipping involved... Just my two cents. I for one, living in Germany, would expect the German customs to charge me a hefty tax bill for importing a completely assembled bench weighing 10kg...

Thats right. Its not cost effective to ship such a heavy item internationally. I've asked my friend about the drawing but he doesn't make it. All the thing he need is the general dimension of the bench (HxDxW), he estimated the rest using photos from website.

That is sad to hear actually. I am using an upsidedown wooden box o. Top of my desk as workbench, I definitively need a proper bench table since I am loosing way too many screws that just roll down...

How about this as an interim?

Or, in my case, instead of raising the table top I lowered the chair. I sit on a footstool with a pillow on top, which puts the work right at shoulder height. Not the most comfortable position in the world, sitting with legs stretched out in front of me, but I just pretend I'm in a formula 1 car.

I wonder if the desk in the original post can be sold as a kit, (and even without some non essential parts like drawer knobs, screws, etc) It could be disassembled but ready to assemble with instructions about screws and knobs to use. That way I believe the customs charge may not be that high (?) and lighter weight. Just an idea...It is very well made...Ofrei version is mostly cardboard so to speak.

Well, this is the first bench that my friend has made upon my request. And we dont think there is enough need for mass production. Even if he could produce it for sale shipping cost would be the problem

Probably if correctly marketed, it could be that you'd get enough people interested in it. As far as this forum, you can already see that it could be a small success. How many people would be so interested to actually buy it, that is hard to say. But before tossing the idea in the trash can, I would honestly do some research in some watch forums posting the pics you posted here and simply asking people's opinion. As per the shipping costs, that can be sorted out. Actually the buyer pays for the shipping, so you should really not worry too much about that: let the buyer decide if it is too much or not...

My opinion is: having the possibility to buy it, I would. I have been. Searching for something similar for some time, and like me, many hobby watchmakers and collectors are.

      If at all possible, find a service guide for the automatic movements your work on, because the lubrication procedures may have different requirements or rely on oils you would not use in a manual wind train (in addition to the braking grease you mentioned). Some autos like older Seikos do not have a manual wind option, so the procedure of letting down the mainspring without being able to use the crown may require a screwdriver in the ratchet wheel screw and great care. Do you have an auto movement you were planning to start with?

      I am an amateur, so there's that. I do not get fixated on amplitude, lift angles, and beat error. However, 4.8ms would bug me if it were my watch. But you must judge your own skills to appreciate the possibility of going backward. I suggest, that you button it up let your friend enjoy the watch for now. As your skills progress, come back to it and correct it. I assume that this watch has a fixed hairspring pin. Some modern watches have an adjustable pin along with adjustable regulator. These are trivial to get in beat. I own a valjoux 726 my dad gave me on my 18th birthday (a looooong time ago). I broke the ratchet wheel with an aggressive wind 4 yrs ago. I have been waiting for my skills to progress before doing a service. I am close. Your advice is well placed and I will apply it.

      I didn’t find any anomaly to the left of the red mark…reflection? this is the balance in its pivot in the inverted assembly. i can’t see any obvious kinks  and the spring is flat as far as I can see. Either the stud screw is missing, or it’s glued in… I don’t know. I’m loathe to fiddle with it. Any further insights? Thanks!

      Update!  I've dismantled it, cleaned all the glue off, and rebuilt and lubricated the base movement. I'll leave the chrono part for another day. It's running well - great amplitude and keeping time, but it's got a beat error of 4.8ms.    How important is it to correct this? I'm worried that the potential for making things worse having to take the hairspring off and on repeatedly to adjust this. Would anyone here accept it at that?

I will start another thread and act in a more decent manner for the girls and ladies of the group.  Please what will happen if the forum can't be managed by the administrator, are there provisions in place to preserve the achived member's questions and answers over the years.
