Citizen 5420 Tear Down .

Wonder if someone has done this movement before? And if there is any walk trough help somewhere? Am a little scared of doing wrong . This is kind of rare movement i think ? This are some pictures of the keyless work and that side of the movement . Lot of springs and lefthanded screws . The big black screw is lefthand tread .Two screw marked with arrows are left handed !

Is the black background better? Looks like the details are easier to see? 

This part can't be removed until i remove parts from the other side of the movement .

Sorry it's  a 5420 not 5240. Mixed the numbers up :P . And something is broken in the winding mechanism .The rotor doesn't wind the spring . Should tear down that part tomorrow

Yes as above never worked on this movement so interested in its construction.

That big black screw is a real b!tch.... I think it was threadlocked at the factory...

Is it a left hander ? or if thread locked a touch of heat will release it.

Worked nice for me to remove it . Couldn't see any threadlock. But is a lefthand thread . Used a little larger screwdriver of course .

Now on  the other side. Lifting the whole automatic mechanism off . In one piece . Will deal with that later .

The top clasp is for removing the part on the other side i could remove until .It's for releasing the stem from the keylesswork . 

click spring for removing spring tension in mainspring . And one of the wheels can't be removed. Will be cleaned and just lubricate later .

Started with assembling the keyless work .

Has cleaned the barrel and mainspring . Now i will assemble that . But first i have take apart the upper bridge with the reverse wheels . I wonder what kind of oil i should use to oil the reverse wheels? D-5 ?

Coming together again . As you see the barrel has a slot in the arbor . That is for winding up the mainspring

Went a little fast there in the end . Parashock jewels in the balance . Same as in a Seiko movement . They are easy to work on . As long as the spiral is in one-piece . As you see i have removed the rotor. Much easier to put things back without the rotor swinging around . Have a few things to put back on the dial side . Like the date ring and two springs for the winding mechanism .

Haven't got the winding mechanism to work properly . Now i understand :).Thanks to all the pictures i have i can see that i am missing a little bushing . It's where i point with the black arrow.  Have looked on the floor and on the bench. Have not find it :( .

Yes i found it .That must be one of the smallest thing i ever found? I don't now when i lost it?  The room has been vacuum cleaned everyday .Thanks to my little tape roller from Ikea i found it :wub: . Love those tape rollers :) Now it's working great .

HATE  pallet forks . One of the jewels on the pallet fork was bent down. Manage to straighten it but the movement ain't working so good . Have some pallet forks from a citizen 8200 movement .Looks the same but don't now if they would work . There is nowhere i could check either?

Nope the pallet fork for the 8200 is not the same as for the 5420 . But the fork work like it should? There is no speed in the movement? Very low amplitud? The mainspring looked ok . Nice S-bend . Have now idea where to find parts for this movement? New mainspring? But what size? Nothing on  http://www.ranfft.de/cgi-bin/bidfun-db.cgi?10&ranfft&0&2uswk&Citizen_5420 about mainspring size?

Snapped the 4th wheel pivot  :pulling-hair-out: . That is why i haven't updated . Change the mainspring and it works ok . But when i should put everything back together . Snap  :growl:

What a great post you've presented . It's like watching a soap opera...only better . I have serviced a few Homers and 8200 calibers , but this caliber is new to me .

I can suggest that you talk to Sweephand [stephen} as he has the great Vintage Citizen blog . He's a really good guy and the guru of vintage Citizens . He's always my go-to guy for Citizen questions .

I manage to find some parts from Oldswisswatches.com. Also found two movement on Ebay . But they where very rusty . So avoid if i can . Hope this would do it . Had put the movement together but did'nt find any amplitud . That why i tested on changing the mainspring .

I've been looking around....Ranfft puts the 5420 in the 54xx family [kinda] , and I was looking at Sweephands Citizen movement table from the 30's to the 70's...

and saw 5400 movements from the 60's and early 70's listed and related .

 

 

 

 

Also I saw these donors for sale on the Bay...5430 , 5440 , 5450 , and 5470...

 

 

 

There were more donors listed but I only attached this example . 

Sweephand could probably tell you more about interchangeability on this movement family .

They will all work .As long as there in the 5400-5470 family . I have those and some other movement in my watch list . My thought was that they where to rusty to find any parts from .
