I recently inherited a watch from my grandfather. A Timex Indiglo WR30M. I was told that it probably just had a dead battery. So I watched a video where a person took the back cover off and put a new batter in then used a watch press to put it back together.
I purchased the battery. I took the back off with a tiny flathead screwdriver, pulled the old battery out and put the new battery in. It would not stay on its own but when I held it in the watch would work!

Then I tried putting the back cover back on the watch. But it would not go. I pushed with my fingers. I pushed with a clamp. I tried leaning on it with my body weight. During one of my attempts to put the back on the watch, It was shifting and so I was resetting the battery and I heard a louder click. I turned the watch over and the second hand was loose and would fall to point at whichever way was down. turning the dial on the side of the watch does not turn any of the watch hands anymore.

I don't know what I did to my watch or how to fix it.
Does anyone have any advice on how I broke my watch and how it might be fixed?

It is difficult to diagnose watch problems remotely. To do it remotely and based only upon a verbal description is often impossible.

If you post some images of the watch, both dial side and from the back, showing the movement, it might be possible to work out what has gone wrong.

I suspect you’ve pushed down on the movement itself, displacing it towards the front (crystal side) of the watch, hopefully pictures will clarify whether they’d the case or not.

Best Regards,

Hi. I have recently changed a battery in an indigo, on receipt of the watch the case back was GLUED on requiring cleaning off before opening the watch and cleaning the case and back before re fitting. These backs require a case back/ glass press as they are very tight.  In your case as explained by @Mercurial is that in your efforts you have displaced the sweep hand due to undue pressure how you did it  who knows but it’s done and will require the movement removing to re fit or the glass lifting either way tools are involved who’s cost would march that of the watch.

Thank you bother for your advice. I do realize it would be extremely difficult to diagnose an issue without seeing the watch in person. Here are a couple of pictures of the back and a couple of GIFs of the front showing the second hand falling to point down most of the time and the nob on the side not turning the hands.

Yeah, I was worried I might have totaled the watch.

Hi. For the hands to turn. The crown has to be pulled out to engage the hand set mechanism, are you doing that!. The sweep is either loose on it# arbour or the arbour is broken. The only effective way to find out is to remove the movement from the case and check.  When the batter6 is fitted does the watch work or not. If not probably best to find a working donor on the net
