Hi watch people,  i trust we are all well. Thought a dedicated movement ID area might be useful. Not specifically for restoration advice but just somewhere were we could throw a movement size and pictures of the plate, top bridge anything with numbers or letters and keyless works at the forum so members could chip in and help with a quick search through their  resources . Bit of practice for those with knowledge and lists and newbies could pick up the idea on how to  find out what movement they are working on. Form something of a database, a lot of us have the bestfits for research but i have Flume and Swiss catalogs as well, some of us may have more, plus some movements are unlisted . This can take some real work to find out what they are. A one thread fits all movements identification.

Hi Rich,

I am not quite sure what you’re looking for here? You have already posted this in the watch movement identification dedicated area of the forum. As there are 10’s of thousands of movements/variations the only really useful thing would be a comprehensive database like ranfft was and I think that was a lifetime’s work with lots of extra information and input from users globally. If you look at emmywatch it’s a fair attempt but has a lot of inconsistencies and inaccuracies which whilst maybe giving a starting place we still need to do further research as often as not to confirm identities that are towards the obscure end of the scale.

just my tuppence

Hi Tom, can we access this section as a whole and scroll through all the threads in it ?... i wasn't sure. There are plenty of movement identification sites but we only tend to use them to verify an already suspect from using the keyless works fingerprint system of bestfits or to aquire basic information about the movement. I thought rather than folk start up a new thread for each watch ID enquiry.....lets just keep them all collectively in one place.

Here is one i have just now. All ready stripped down unfortunately,  Plate size 23.7mm -10.5 ligne letter L and B on a brass plate and 2 keyless components...an unusual yoke/spring combination, should have it assembled enough later today. Cant quite remember but i think i got as far as Gruen.

A single thread for I.d. would get rather unwieldy rather fast Rich. This section is scrollable for sure and has 11 pages of requests for help to identify movements. Google site search is probably the best way to look for something specific, though not sure if you would find more about a movement than you already know with any search and all forum integrated searches I have seen are pretty rubbish.

moderators can try too catch id requests and put them in this section but only full threads, as far as I have been able to figure out. Which gives the problem that often people post an id request in an extant thread “I have something like that, what is this one?” So would end up moving a thread about whatever into the movement id section when it should be in the movement trouble shooting area or whatever. Folks also don’t put the request for id in the subject or any tags so not always easy to see it’s a movement I’d thread. All we can do really is encourage folks to post in the correct area and even for veterans here it can be tricky as to exactly were a thread should be started.

cheers

I haven't tried scrolling this whole section so i wasn't sure. The idea was really to cut down on folk starting up a new topic with a title each time. I thought even if this thread grows huge...its just a quick place to get a single use from it.....just some movement identification and nothing else really...I think the bit more advanced could use it when they run into a wall.

That is what I believe we have here in this section Rich, it doesn’t make sense to me not to create a new thread for each id request. The really hard bit is to get folk to go back and update the thread subject with the found movement id which would make the section so much more useful.

I just wanted to take this opportunity to pay tribute to those of you who volunteer your time and commitment as moderators and I also think you do a fantastic job. In addition, I am sure Mark is super-satisfied and super-happy with your efforts.

Historically, moderation has been quite contentious (without naming names or going into details), so the contrast with how well it works today is really striking.

Fanfare and cheers to you moderators! 🙂👍

I think about that person sometimes and honestly hope he's doing well. No hard feelings. We're all different and sometimes there is a connect and sometimes a disconnect. That's just how life is.

I do too...we are all different and we have no idea why that person behaves the way they do. I had a shitty upbringing and my dad was a drunken bully a lot of the time ( major issues god rest his soul,  i know he had some good in him ). I wont let that taint my behaviour towards folk and i try to get on with everybody because life is too short, i act the fool, mostly because i like to see folk laugh but i have a very serious mature side when it's required and i absolutely detest bullies and drunks 🤨, i give folk the benefit of the doubt but only for so long, i can be real sod when someone rubs me up the wrong way.

I remember some of the comments that " he who shall not be named " would make to beginners.....my tolerance ceiling used to instantly drop 🤨

Similar Idea was put forward for posting links to  data sheets and oiling charts.

Mark expressed concern about legality of simply posting links .

WE DON'T WANT TO GET IN TROUBLE DOWN THE LINE,  he said

We carried on anyway ,  lucky no one has sued WRT so far.

Guess such  thread  be alright as long as its our own in- house brew, a challenge will be, we would need an army of moderators.

I dont really understand what the issue  would be with this thread, or something else set up just to provide a quick service answering system based mostly on looking at pictures of the keyless works. The identity of a movement is by far the most asked question. Sometimes i will come on the forum wanting to offer help, its good to find someone wanting to know a movement, i enjoy the digging up of evidence. I thought that just one question stacked thread would be better than 1000s of threads in one section all asking the same question .

The various individual identification threads can sometimes end up each several pages long. I just do not see how it could work with everyone posting all requests in a single thread.

What could be a useful one (which I thought you may mean, when you started this thread), is a moderator- or advanced-member only sticky "index" type thread with a thumbnail image, calibre type & a link to the relevant full thread, for each identified movement.

That could work as a quick reference that can be browsed through easily for known movements without hours of looking through many old & long threads?

It would need someone with a lot of spare time to initially compile it, but then only one or two new entries a week, if that?

🤔 that wasn't exactly the idea i had in mind Rob, not so much a database though that would be extremely useful. This thread would become enormous and endless to troll though. It was more of a quick service.... basic all you need to know question....." this is the plate size and these are the keyless parts, anyone recognise them or fancy 10 mins of looking through your resources to find out the make and calibre for me " that was really the essence of the idea. After that....delete the posts or if at all possible...once the movement has been identified rearrange the original post question in alphabetical order....but i think that could end up being a mammoth task.

If it was made fairly easy to re-arrange  the posts alphabetically, I'd be prepared to do that, it would kick my ocd into overdrive 😅

I can see a few problems Rich

1. Every question is essentially the same, “anyone know what this movement is?” Albeit phrased differently.
2. Forum software is designed to operate as a repository of conversations held in chronological order, not alphabetical or any other ordering

3. Deleting post after identifying the movement would be an administrative burden and also remove potentially useful information

an idea which could be helpful would be to create a pinned post outlining what information, photos etc. that would be useful to have in any request. Write one up mate and submit it to Mark as an idea.

You’re in a funny mood today 😂

a topic that is pinned always appears at the top of a forum section and any new posts are automatically added below it. In this case it should be the fist post in this forum giving a guide on what you should include in a request for help in identifying a movement. This would be a “how to” for submitting the request. An admin or moderator can pin a post, I suggested submitting it to Mark for his approval as it’s his site.

sorry I don’t speak English, I am a jock after all 🤪
