What have I done to my balance?

I've just done the free oscillation test with the pallet fork removed and the pallet bridge in place. It is now oscillating for more than a minute in both dial up and dial down.

The end shake is still more than it needs, I think, and certainly more than the end shake on the pallet, but it has reduced and does not now go as low as it did. I filmed the end shake check, concentrating on the lower pivot. I wonder whether I should disassemble the balance cock again to see if the upper setting can also be pushed in a little. That might reduce the end shake a bit more, but I also wonder whether there's anything to be gained by doing that given that the alignment with the pallet fork is good even at the extremes of travel.

I hadn't considered lapping the stone. Is that something a beginner hobbyist is likely to be able to do successfully? What's involved -- is it just rubbing on successive grades of diamond lapping film?

Now the things are much better and I expect the movement will work normally. Yes, the end shake is still big. It is worth trying to push the cock setting, but it holds in place the regulator and stud carrier and if  the setting has shifted, they probably should get loosened.

The stone lapping can be easier done with diamond paste like 10 microns on brass or soft iron plate. You just press and move the stone on the surface with finger.

I guess I'll order some 10 micron diamond paste and get a piece of brass from the local hardware store and give it a try. The alternative is to replace the stone so I really have little to lose by trying it. Thanks for the suggestion.

I don't really want to take the balance off the cock again, but it makes sense, I think, to make sure the Diashock setting is properly seated so I can at least say I've done all I am currently able.
