Hi

I am new to watch repair and some years ago inherited a silver pocket watch from a great uncle. Unfortunately, it was not working. Well, more precisely, a gentle shake gets it going for a very short time and then it stops. My neighbour, who was an amateur horologist but has since died, suggested that either the third or fourth wheel appeared to have lost some teeth. I would like to have a go at mending it myself but would like to identify what parts I might need and where to obtain them. For this, I have been trying to learn more about the maker and the movement but without much luck.

I believe it dates from about the 1920s. It was made for Camerer Kuss & Co., London. The face is also marked as Swiss Made, but I can't find any reference to identify the manufacturer. The movement is approx. 38mm in diameter.

I would be grateful for any help anyone is able to provide.

Many thanks!

Eric

Welcome to the forum.

Better photos of the hallmarks would help date it as the K in Kuss was changed to a C from memory in the early 1900s.

Patent Number is 16831 which does appear to tie in with the case serial no. 1085129 as being Longines 1899

Thanks for the replies. Yes, I think the patent number is definitely 16831. I have tried to get a better image of the hallmarks.

The watch's owner, lived from 1897 to 1977.

These are just the Swiss Silver Hallmarks so never passed
through an assay office here in the UK which is unfortunate.

Edit

It's pre 1914 as that's when they changed from Kuss to Cuss.

Thanks for the help everyone. I am definitely learning more about the watch.

The main thing I would hope to find out is what size third or fourth wheel would be needed for repair. Being new to this I am not sure how to find the part specification. Longines parts on eBay have a part number and calibre; e.g. see photo. I'm not sure how to go about finding the necessary information for this particular watch. Similar looking movements online seem to be 18.97 but I can't see any relevant markings to this effect.

I think it should be 18.79 or at least a variation of.

Edit

Could be a 17.79 or again a variation of.

I presume there's nothing under the balance?

You may have to remove the dial and check for details their.
