Movement is lose inside the case in a 1976 Timex

Hi everyone,

I bought this Timex watch in eBay recently and the movement was already lose inside the case. Everything is working, but when I move my arm, the movement shakes inside the case, and I guess this is not good.

I opened the back case and saw that the plastic movement holder was missing.

I'd like some advice on what to look for or if someone would have the plastic holder for this movement (I guess it's an M24 movement), like shown in the pictures below.

You may struggle with generic spacer rings as they're a bit more specialised for Timex.

You'll need to start with a round ring something like these.

well those are all nice suggestion but, there is no plastic movement holder for this model. Rather it is a front loader and has a dial ring the fits between the dial and crystal.  This hold the assembly in place.  🙂

Some news about the watch. Indeed, the ring is missing.

I finally got some time to remove the crystal and inside I only found the movement attached to the dial, but lose and with no ring.

The crystal also needs replacement. Unfortunately I broke a small piece while removing it... It's a pity after having polished it with Polywatch by hand.

Any idea where I could find these two parts here in Germany?

The crystal apparently was easy to find here. I'm waiting for it to arrive to confirm.

The dial ring I could not find anywhere. Any tips would be welcome.

Actually, I found another one but it looks in a better shape than mine. Let's see who will be donating pieces to whom if I manage to win that auction 🙂

I didn't win it. The auction exploded and ended higher than what I paid for my watch :). Back to the first square...

Probably good news. I found one selling for parts, that looks promising. It is the exact same model. The case looks way better than mine, the crystal appears to be in a  good condition, and it has the movement spacer that nine doesn't have. The movement is broken and it has no crown, but I don't need that. It should arrive in 7-10 days.

Look who just arrived. Some work will be done over the weekend. The wristband is very old, but I don't believe it is original neither is worth keeping. Case, crystal and the movement ring will be donated to the other one.

The other watch doesn't have the crown and it was sold to me as the movement was broken, but the balance wheel appears to be ok. I know that the M24 is especially hard to disassemble and re-assemble. I might try to fix it later.

In the end, the work that I'd do on weekend, was done now 😅 and the old watch has a new case, new crystal and movement ring.

      If at all possible, find a service guide for the automatic movements your work on, because the lubrication procedures may have different requirements or rely on oils you would not use in a manual wind train (in addition to the braking grease you mentioned). Some autos like older Seikos do not have a manual wind option, so the procedure of letting down the mainspring without being able to use the crown may require a screwdriver in the ratchet wheel screw and great care. Do you have an auto movement you were planning to start with?

      I am an amateur, so there's that. I do not get fixated on amplitude, lift angles, and beat error. However, 4.8ms would bug me if it were my watch. But you must judge your own skills to appreciate the possibility of going backward. I suggest, that you button it up let your friend enjoy the watch for now. As your skills progress, come back to it and correct it. I assume that this watch has a fixed hairspring pin. Some modern watches have an adjustable pin along with adjustable regulator. These are trivial to get in beat. I own a valjoux 726 my dad gave me on my 18th birthday (a looooong time ago). I broke the ratchet wheel with an aggressive wind 4 yrs ago. I have been waiting for my skills to progress before doing a service. I am close. Your advice is well placed and I will apply it.

      I didn’t find any anomaly to the left of the red mark…reflection? this is the balance in its pivot in the inverted assembly. i can’t see any obvious kinks  and the spring is flat as far as I can see. Either the stud screw is missing, or it’s glued in… I don’t know. I’m loathe to fiddle with it. Any further insights? Thanks!

      Update!  I've dismantled it, cleaned all the glue off, and rebuilt and lubricated the base movement. I'll leave the chrono part for another day. It's running well - great amplitude and keeping time, but it's got a beat error of 4.8ms.    How important is it to correct this? I'm worried that the potential for making things worse having to take the hairspring off and on repeatedly to adjust this. Would anyone here accept it at that?
