Seiko 6139-6005 chronograph

Falling down the chronograph rabbit hole. My fixer upper April 1976 arrived yesterday. Needs a crown, wheel indicator spring, crystal, new pushers, and a minute recorder wheel. Got it working and everything seems original. But waiting on the parts. The second hand constantly runs so not sure the issues. Will wait until most of the parts come in before going farther, but pretty happy all things considered.

The dial has seen better days but the case, bezel and bracelet are pretty untouched by time, for the most part.

This is the chronograph seconds so presume it's something to do with the pushers being seized.

The pushers are bent, so not sure if the force used did damage to the hammer or to something else. I have not worked on a 6139 before, I have worked on landerons and a Venus so I think the cam is different.

I removed the automatic winding mechanism and found the 3 screws on the plate below that were loose. Got the plate back in correct position including the center wheel and minute recorder wheel and tightened the 3 screws and put back the auto works and now the chrono works and returns correctly. The pushers are still giving problems due their bentness, but will wait on the crown and pushers before getting under the dial...

The crown and indicator wheel spring are purportedly original. The pushers are certain to be aftermarket. I see original pushers online and I might be able to fix one of mine, but wanted to get it fully operational and see what i can do. I got the stem out by threading an extender on and looks to be in good shape. Put the indicator pinion on the stem and put back in and everything works smoothly, including the day and date jumping by pushing the stem.

 Just seems to have the day ring off by a half step, but that entails taking the hands and dial off to fix. So that day is coming but not tonight!

I'd be interested to see the crown as they're a rare item and not cheap for an original.

You can normally tell the aftermarket crown as they have small double o-rings compared to a single large one on the original.

It came today and is aftermarket, no dimple on the top...

Are you sure you got the correct crown as even that aftermarkets I've seen have the dimple.

50M04SN1 is the part number I search for. It fits the case, but if you know of a good source, I want to eventually get an original. As you say really hard to find, it seems.

Unfortunately sold, but i have been looking closely at the pictures and see one in particular on the bay. 

Thanks for the links, i have saved the seller. I found something on volunteertime's store that says NOS, and the pictures look good, but the "AF Switzerland To Fit" in the title seems strange...

Found it and as it's got the wrong o-ring.

I wouldn't be convinced it's original and think that's what the AF stands for but looks a decent aftermarket if it would accept the correct o-ring.

I see D and E ring gaskets at Cousins that are probably the correct ones for Seiko crowns and pushers...

no affiliation but they are a very well known Seiko specialist based in Adelaide south Australia. They have seiko parts and gasket sets made for their own use and sell the surplus.

Here's a picture of my 6139. I had the same problem as yours with the pushers. I wasn't able to find original pushers before but the aftermarket pushers I placed have so far held up. I also got it from ebay. That was 3 years ago.

I also make sure that the chronograph is always running. From what I read from other watch sites, thie movement will last longer if the chronograph is running.

I have heard the same thing from a local watchmaker about the Seiko chronos in that there is more stress when it is not running than when it is. Which might be why there is no sweep or sub seconds on these; the design call for the chrono seconds hand to be used like a sweep seconds hand.

Supposedly in the 6139 movement, more friction is caused when the chrono is not on. True or not, I like to err on the safe side.

An update got a new crown and indicator wheel spring which I promptly sent into space when trying to install. Still looking for it and ordered another and got that one in. So looks like maybe some stem broke in the lost crown (was not one when purchased) and so the jump day date quickset doesn't work when cased up as just a little too short So new stem on the way. But the crystal arrived as have the aftermarket pushers as placeholders until I can fix the old bent ones or aquire originals.

NOS stem came in with a little drama and I cut to correct length thinking i had plenty of excess stem. Cut it close, so to speak but everything worked out and the quick set jump day and date feature works perfectly. Now to find out what is going on with the minute recorder as the hand slightly jumps but doesn't actually move forward on the dial.
