Hey watch people another year is almost upon us in Europe " Happy New Year " everyone. My last question of the year addressed to our "Timex" folk. I have this Ingersoll... US Time on the back .... movement...pre///combined company Timex. Calibre 201..I believe it to be the same or very similar to a Timex M22 . Dial dated 1963.

🤔 actually maybe not 63 , i think I have misunderstood the dial code.

Yes it is the same as the M22, probably the most challenging Timex movements to reassemble and with the fragile copper spring strips holding tension on the stem retainer bar.

But I'm not familiar with that format of dial codes. I think 1963 would be right around the last year you'd find this movement before the M24 replaced it.

Thanks Michael, I read some history on the names changes and they were right around 1963.

Thanks for the heads up on the movement.

Mickey dials with the hands don't appear in Timex catalogs until 1968, but those numerals are different than your dial and I am sure the 1968 model had an M24.  They were still listed as Ingersoll character watches throughout the 1960s but the dials in the 1960-67 catalogs don't ever seem to show the characters. It does seem possible the old Ingersoll movements were still being sold later into the 1960s if the catalogs still mention Ingersoll and US Time in connection with the character watches.

JerseyMo would just know know the year from his own head.

If this blog is to be believed, your watch was in production as far back as the 1940's. https://vintageradar.com/en-us/blogs/vintage-magazine-vintage-watches-jewelry-and-fashion-blog/ingersoll-mickey-mouse-watches-since-1933

That same watch with the dotty face was for sale on ebay when i bought this one 3 weeks ago.

It's till for sale . I think the date mentioned in thd blog is wrong. Same dial as mine , but is the movement nearly 80 years old ?  No I don't think so.

If you go to the link I posted earlier it's showing as 1948.

that is a Model 22 movement that was introduced in the second half of the 1950's.  the 201 is a factory number and not caliber.

Here's that dial and tonneau case from a 1948 Life magazine ad. Too bad they don't picture the movement. https://clockhistory.com/0/ingersoll/document-1470-1.html?page=2

The Ingersoll wristwatch movements from the 1930s were not terribly different than the later Timex movements in the 50s except decentral seconds. And all of them were basically scaled down versions of the Ingersoll dollar pocket watch movements from the 1920s

Here's the movement from the late 1940s model, resembling the dollar watch construction.

Thanks for the clarification JerseyMo, the 201 seemed so obviously to be a caliber number. Am I correct then in assuming that Timex did not stamp their movements with a cal. Number?

In the ad of link you posted, the matching deco alarm clock. The ebay seller of the 1948 watch is selling that same alarm clock as well, for cheap.

Yes, Timex did not mark their movements with a cal. number.

that is very interesting setup.  What was the result?

Sorry for the late reply JerseyMo,  I didn't realise you were still on this thread. The movement was fully wound and left to soak for a day in paraffin while it unwound then half wound again and slowly rotated in a USM for 5 mins, then 2 rinses in IPA. Then gave it a little jet wash cleaning with a hypo, the result looked pretty clean. The first Timex I fully disassembled to clean it, I was just curious to try the non-disassembly method.

ok,  the cleaners used will vary but overall the method is to soak and rinse  than follow with lubrication.  For myself the method is much the same but can be adjusted depending on the condition of the movement. FOr example if someone used WD-40 or grease, I will soak in Goo-Gone.   This is an all purpose glue\grease  remover.

Thanks for that information JerseyMo, I've heard of that stuff, not sure if it's available here in the UK .

Goo gone is like kerosene with lemon oil. A good soak in kerosene work just as well.

I just did a ladies timex with a nightmare of a winding/setting spring that goes under the rocking bar holding the winding/setting pinions. It not like the usual Timex movements with a fixed spring on the other side of the mainplate.

@AndyGSi that 1979 Disco Mickey just became my new grail watch.

I just learned out of nowhere that my own sister has been sitting on a Disco Mickey watch for who knows how many years.
