Clutch won't fully engage winding gear

I just did a rebuild and it was working fine but now the clutch will not mate securely with the winding gear so that I can not wind the watch using the stem and crown.  The clutch moves freely, the yoke is in the groove, the yoke spring is in place, The setting lever spring (cover) looks ok. I can click the stem in and out to all 3 positions but in the winding position the gears don't mesh fully. I removed the hacking lever thinking that was causing but the issue still persists. What am I missing?

If I interpret you correctly, the winding pinion is not turning when you turn the crown. Is it possible you have installed it in reverse? The sawtooth face of the winding pinion needs to mate with the corresponding edge of the sliding clutch.

If the winding pinion is turning, then look to where the winding pinion meshes with the crown wheel to determine whether the crown wheel turns when you turn the crown.

 

(The winding pinion is the bit that looks something like one of these: . I think it's what you meant by the "winding gear", but you might have meant the crown wheel or even the ratchet wheel.)

Yes, we need clear pictures. Now we only know that the movement has 3 positions of the stem, so it is probably wrist watch movement.

When You say 'The gears don't mesh fully', I assume the winding pinion and sliding pinion don't mesh. Is it so? Does it mean that the clutch lever is not pressed enough by it's spring or something block it's movement? Often times the bent teeth on the winding/sliding pinions get worn and this is the simple reason for the bad function of the pair.

Sorry for the terminology. Yes, the sliding pinion is not engaging the winding pinion when in winding mode. The spring seems ok but my feeling is something is blocking the last little bit.

What's the movement and can you post a better photo of this area.

Bob, the pictures are not clear enough to see anything. What limits the clutch lever/sliding pinion  movement towards winding pinion? Does the clutch lever touch the setting lever? There must be some gap between clutch lever/setting lever, the limit must be the sliding pinion resting on winding pinion. Are the bent teeth OK (not worn and smashed)? Is it possible the clutch lever to be put upside down?

Fixed it. The sliding pinion was in reverse. It took the 10x mag to see the difference in splines and it was not as obvious as others I have worked with. Anyway winds fine now.
