This watch was part of a watchmakers estate. Mostly disassembled when I dug it out. While restoring, I discovered that the lower balance jewel was locked. Who knows how that could happen.

In the process of addressing this I need to know which way the jewel should be removed. Push out toward the dial?

What do you mean by locked? I would assume, maybe incorrectly that the hole in the plate for a friction fit jewel is parallel, and thus would push in either direction.

Damn autocorrect. "Cocked" Not planar with the plate

OK, the hole is cylindrical, but the stone will get out easier in direction to the dial, as this is where it came in. If You use flat face punch that lies directly on the stone, it may be will correct the stone position and make it parallel well before it is out and it may be enough, but check the distance between end stone and hole stone to ensure it is correct.

Well, I used a conical punch on the dial side and a flat stump on the train side and gently pressed it in.  The watch is running with good amplitude!

I used a Seitz jeweling tool that was also part of this purchase.  It was dirty but 99% complete.  I had to clean it up before I could use it.  Worked great.

Nice that the hands were there and not fused together. I have one that needs hands and one awaiting service…Did you change the mainspring? I’m contemplating what sized alloy…

No, I did not change the mainspring. Pretty sure I have one though. 3-4 years ago I was into these Walthams. So I acquired dials, hairsprings, staffs, and a mainspring or two. Then I moved on to Elgins. Until this batch showed up, I had moved on.
