I decided it was time to put a new mainspring in my 6309. Serviced the watch while I was at it. Running very nicely. Left it over night, +6 seconds, 0.2ms beat error and 220° amplitude which I gather is ok for this. Pretty consistent in all 6 positions. Happy.

So I start putting the rest of it back together, and when I put the canon pinion back on it stops. Stripped it all down, can't see anything wrong. Pull the pinion and it starts back up.

Train of wheels was super free when checked during service. I just took it back down to just the train and it runs free without the canon pinion but not when it's fitted.

Can't see anything wrong.

I'll keep going over it, and I've checked rebuild videos to make sure I haven't done anything wrong or missed anything, but is there any simple common cause I'm for this?

Watch worked fine before but was loosing 5 mins a day and only had 150 amplitude, hence the new spring.

Could the minute wheel or date/day wheels be causing the stoppage? that is if they are installed of cause.

Is there end shake when the cannon pinion is fitted to the centre wheel?

Is the clutch wheel in time setting mode?

None of the day date stuff is fitted.

Yes to end shake, that's what I don't understand. I just made 100% sure the brass second wheel was fully seated on it's arbor by pressing it on more. Nothing is touching anything and.it all has play where it should.

Not sure what position the stem is in but it shouldn't matter right now.

I took it apart and back together a couple of times. Pulled the pinion on and off a few times and after a few repetitions it decided it wants to work again. Dont think its quite right though.

I'll check it again tomorrow with fresh eyes.

Just checked on it, it's running, but amplitude is down to 120.

Pulling the pinion off makes no difference. I need to go through it again.

So annoying, it was running great. Pinion wasn't even hard to click on.

Here You are wrong. Put the winding/setting mechanism in winding mode.

I'll try that.

But I hadn't touched the stem. It was running perfect while I rebuilt the rest of it and it stops/starts depending on if the Pinion was on or not.

My other thought is maybe I've managed to bend the little bridge that holds the second wheel when putting the pinion on.

Well, lesson learnt! You know what they say about assumption.

Turns out I had put a wrong screw in the dial side that was fouling the barrel. Only slightly, and fitting the pinion must have moved something a little, who knows.

But it's back up and running now.

I guess if i can't work out why something is a problem, maybe it's NOT the problem!

    • That’s a nice idea, But i’m committed to providing this site as a gift to the watch repair community as my thank you for my incredible life i’ve had in this business. Ive done well and unless my financial circumstances change then i’m more than happy to foot the bill. If circumstances do change then be assured that I will make an appeal. For now, I’m comfortable with the way things are and I am extremely delighted to remove Google Ads from this site and to stop Patreon, it feels like a major step forward 🙂 Sorry, I missed your reply, I got blinded by another poster in this thread. Yes - I can confirm that I have always seen WRT as a not-for-profit website, and therefore - not a business as such. I’m lucky and have done well in my life due to a decision made in my teens to start a watch repairing apprenticeship which has sustained myself and my family for many years now. Consider this my small way of paying it forward. Ive been committed to keeping the site alive on a technical and financial level for over 10 years now and I have zero plans to change that. Thank you for your kind words by the way. And as for your wish - nobody can control what happens in life, if something happens to me I have things in place with my family but I’m just not comfortable talking about my personal business - I wish a certain person would respect that, but i’ve calmed down now - i’m only human 😄
    • Yes, exactly. I've seen a few different versions, but mine has the blue water symbol, not white.    I think it's Acrylic. The case is plastic so I would the is the lens would be too.
    • Hi there Josh, welcome to the forum.
    • From the same listing, the back side: I would guess that the back pops off rather than the front. You can see a little groove there where the caseback sits over the winding stem, rather than a case tube. Look for an indent or notch around the back. It might be possible to pry this off from almost anywhere on the back if it sits right against the rubber strap. The movement looks like it is from the Ronda RL family (015 or 115 or something? I forget which numbers have a calendar and which don't)
    • I'd expect a similar notch somewhere around the rear to pop that off.
