Rebushing an out of round barrel bushing

Recommended Posts

Funnily enough, I made a lesson on this subject for my third year students. As @nickelsilverhas already pointed out, that there is no magical fix just using a reamer in a jewelling tool, especially if you have to use several to open up the hole to the correct diameter for the bush. The hole will wander on a badly ovaled hole, no matter how good you think you are! Btw, what a lovely set-up you've made for your faceplate @nickelsilver.

It's a pity you can't post videos on here, as a couple of slides have them. The slide with the crosshair on the centering microscope picks up the outside of the hole as it is turned whilst centering the work with light taps on the side of the bridge or mainplate. That's the hardest part of the job, really. Once the hole is centred, or what is left of it, the hole is bored open just a tad smaller than the reamer which is 0.01 smaller than the bush you make. You can bore it to 0.01 undersize by measuring the hole with a plug gauge then fit the bush that is 0.01 mm bigger than the bored/reamed hole.

I do like this kind of work, as it's so satisfying when it all comes together

another, less accurate option would be to try and center it based on the radius of the recess, then install a new bushing, then you can bore that out more accurately by setting the cutter height to the center of the part, and scoring two lines 90 degrees apart in rotation, and the center point it the drilling point.

🤔 not sure I'm entirely understanding the plan.  Basically filling the hole as best you can to center with a bush or brass plug then decide on the new bearing position ?

The new position based on dividing circles ?

Basically yes. Center it as best as you can, bore out the hole until its concentric, then plug with brass. Then, you should mount the bridge on to the mainplate, and mount the whole mainplate with the bridge facing the headstock. Then center the arbor hole on the mainplate in the headstock, and drill a small hole through the mainplate and into the new bushing. Then reverse the mainplate in the headstock  again, and bore the hole to size. Then its in perfect alignment.

    • Different methods for different reasons and different levels of skill. The methods change as the skill improves, it's just a way of progression and evolving. The reverse is true, when a skill deteriorates, the ways change to compensate.
    • Desperately in need of some human interaction please 😅 schools off for Easter and I haven't left my house for four days. I'm busy sorting and partially stripping back to identify old movements for donor parts, but warm and cosy in the Watchroom. I've managed about 50 up to now since Monday with only one unidentified ( which I might put up for Cluedo later ), so slowly filling up the new donor draw.  Strange that 25% of them are BFG movements. Probably another 100 or so to go through. The Flume book I'm using is easier to navigate than the Bestfit, this one dates to 1972 and is laid out better than the older editions, as far as I know there are more recent editions published.
    • Didn't know shimming conforms to Swiss horolog standards, in watch repair, if its to  compensate for pivot wear, it actually is not a bad practice, for the following reasons.  1- No need to deform any part.  2- Substitutes restaffing balance wheel, thus no need to re-poise balance wheel, among other tasks to built a balance complete.   Which is why, I tend to recommend shimming specially to beginers.  Lets not forget,  to beginers, getting a non runner to tick and perhaps tok 🤩  is best encouragement.  Regs
    • Hello and welcome from Leeds, England.
    • Actually the last two were not so long ago, I was actually after the stakes and the Trupoise just happened to be there as a bonus. Just counted them, I have 4 and another similar one but better 🤦‍♂️. So yes they do come up for sale quite cheap sometimes if nobody is wanting to buy one at the time. Somewhat of an overreaction ! I have learnt a few things from Kalle ( generally not what to do lol ) , but he honestly does my head in . I might even have to demote him to the level of our new watch term- generously donated by John-  of  " Prior Idiot "  😅 This statement make you " The Man " today. I've had some pretty good finds at carboots inc. A Dirty Dozen, but a Trupoise puts you up there on tge leader board today 😅 And my attention to grammar and spelling is failing today , jist though Id mension thhat. 😅
