Hamilton Electric - gets power, sets time, hands don’t tick

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have installed a new battery and it does receive power. I can set the time BUT the hands will not move on their own; it doesn’t tick. I can see the seconds hand trying but it’s just not going. Any thoughts? Where would I apply oil or lighter fluid? I am not too familiar with electric movements but have worked on a few automatics and manuals. Thank you all in advance!

is not really a Hamilton electric it was only sold by Hamilton it's really a Swiss watch.

then more than likely it's never been serviced so it needs to be serviced. That means it has to be completely disassembled cleaned etc. I'm attaching the service manual.

What exactly means 'it receives power'? How do You understand that it receives power? Does the balance oscillate?

Yes the balance oscillates. I can also see the second hand bouncing around ever so slightly when I push in the crown.

It's hard to tell from that photo but the balance jewel setting looks mangled. Also, the photo shows the movement in the hand setting position which should stop the movement, although it doesn't look like the stop lever is hitting the stop pin. But just to dot the I's and cross the T's, did you try pushing the crown back in?

I finished up one of these (9154) earlier this month and am wearing it now.

They're the jewels near the centre of the movement.

Thank you. That didn’t work and that’s about all I feel comfortable doing myself. I don’t want to take it apart aside from maybe just taking out the balance and reinstalling.

You don't want to be doing anything with the balance if it's working.

Can you post a video on YouTube and show the link as to what the hands are doing.

Have you got any test equipment or a demagnetiser?

Be careful doing that. There are a couple of videos on youtube of people servicing the 9154 and neither remove the balance correctly. It is very easy to damage the coils if you don't follow the exact procedure shown in the tech sheet, which requires the movement to be removed from the case.

I have nothing. Just a collector that can install a battery and add some grease here and there. I can also unwind an “overwound” movement.

If the balance oscillates (and the amplitude is good) and the train is not moving, this means some problem with the transmission of the balance movement to the train. I don't know this particular movement, the ones I have worked on are made with pallet fork and "escape wheel" which look like ones in mechanical movements, but actually act in reverse. There is an index wheel and ratchet for the escape wheel that need adjustment there. Of course, it is possible the train to be blocked somehow, but it will be not letting the balance to oscillate free.

!!!Do not try to demagnetize this movement!!! Do not try to remove the balance, as the coils have to be removed first.

I think you're best passing this to someone else to look at then.

The hand trying to move, indicates gear train is not blocked.  As neven said, escapement on this works in reverse, in other word power is transfered from

fork to the escape wheel, that is escape wheel controls energy  escape , your watch  rather  intakes energy from the fork and transfer it to the escape wheel .

No one suspect is escape wheel not turning, either it doesn't want to move due to dried oil ( probability 15%) , OR is doesn't recieve energy to move ( probability 85%) .

I just made up these probability figures, so by micor-strech of imagination shouldn't hold me responsible.

Who knows ? 😅

So I take the balance-cock assembly, show a clear close up from escape & fork area, thats where is fault is hiding.

thank you! I have no idea what the balance cock assembly is so I’ll have to check when I get home and see if I can get a semi decent picture!

It sounds like I’ll be selling this thing as is and moving on! Anyone want it for $100? Ha

It is electromechanical movement and the balance is completely different. It consist of two wheels/layers of magnets and the coil is situated between them. In order to remove the balance, first the coil must be removed. There are 2 screws that hold the coil and they must be removed, then the coil pulled  to side (the movement out of the case) but carefully as not to touch and rub on the magnets as the coil wire is so thin and fragile that it is a miracle that has survived till today.

The guy hanging on tac ( see photo) is balance+cock assembly. Not a suspect in your watch.

Oh! Thanks I’m familiar with that part and have removed and reinstalled on mechanical. Not trying on this one! Ha

    • HWGIKE#57 Valex FEF 190 15 jewels Swiss lever full service and repair This one was waiting for a balance staff replacement in my cabinet parts and case cleaned up with a new balance staff and a 4th wheel as the original 4th wheel had a broken pivot for the off center second hand. I never attempted a balance staff replacement before however I received a Bergeon Molfres (i was hunting it for about 2 years) and with the help of it I managed to remove the old staff and riveted the new one in. It also received a new MS, crystal and the hole for the MS arbor was also tightened. With the new MS now it has an acceptable performance meaning that the amplitude goes up to 280 fully wound, has an acceptable beat error and I have the two nice lines but only dial up, dial down is not as nice and I could not figure out as why. I have the two lines but the amplitude is dropping to around 230 and the lines are a bit hairy. Both dial up and dial down the lines just go up and down without seemingly any pattern. I cleaned the movement two times, and then a 3rd time pegged out the main plate and train bridge holes but made no change. Both the HS collet and the roller table was too lose on the new staff... I did not count how many times I took the balance cock off to sort out the HS collet, the roller table and the beat error, somebody before me also shortened the HS by pushing it out a bit and it seems every time somebody is messing with the end of the HS the protruding bit is most of the time twisted bent etc. This one was probably one of the most challenging repair and service. I might take the new MS out and clean it lubricate it as I just pushed the new one in to the barrel from the retaining ring. Plus started to re-read the theory of the escapement and how to analyse the graph on the timing machine: Greiner Chronografic Record manual. I am also thinking to put the watch on a 24 hour long run with the eTimer SW it once helped me to figure out what was wrong with a watch. There is an interesting part of the Greiner record manual talking about the pallets and the end shake of the balance and pallet staff. Maybe this is my issue? Who could that possibly identify? After a few years now I am still without a clue how could watchmakers make parts I can only see with my microscope or how could/can they carry out complicated services impossible to do.. real magic..... .... ..... before I sent this post while the pics were uploading I had an idea, i was browsing the possible outcomes on the timing machine I had one for magnetism..... so I demagnetized the movement and it is not hairy now.... two really nice lines 0.2 ms beat error still a bit wavy, but a lot lot better..... argh....
    • Hi there, welcome here.
    • yes the advertising revenue should generate money. The question is how much money? Then as far as the cost of the website goes that's relatively easy to determine? all you would have to do to grasp costs and profitability would be to go to the link below and you can actually get a website for free try it out for free I believe you get no advertising initially. They also talk about that they'll help you out they have marketing tools and some sort of paid subscription or something. So I guess were shopping for a whatever just ask them what would a maybe could use this one as an example in other words it's going to look basically identical to this is going to have advertising a paid subscriptions what's it going to cost? After all they want to sell or give us a message board like this they should bill answer the questions as they're the people who did the software for this. Yes they really said you can have a free discussion group at least to start. https://invisioncommunity.com/ I was curious about the monthly supporter thing where exactly do we find that on this message board? A quick search I'm not finding it so obviously I'm not looking in the right place?
    • Help me out here, but with all the advertising on this site (which I don't mind) wouldn't it pay for itself or even make money for the owner ???
