Forgive my ignorance.  I would have said there wasn't a tube.  This looks to me like the stem goes through the case, has a gasket of some sort, then the crown. 

I just poked at the gasket. It's separate from the crown, but fits inside the crown.  If I cut away the gasket, carefully,  I could put tweezers on the outside of the case to rotate off that crown...  Or cut it off, gulp.

That explains why it looks so rough.

Yes I'd get rid of the gasket and hold the stem their to remove the crown.

Hi. Sooner than hacking the gasket off try gripping the stem between the dial and case with some fine nosed pliers, or even grind a pair down to fit. I have used this method before when stubborn crowns and stems refuse to budge.

Nice. Yah then the intention is to unscrew the crown if yo can get some purchase on it. How much of the back can you expose?

The hope is once the crown is off you lift the movement at the nine position tilting the movement up to clear the case then slide out.
