Hello community.

I recently stopped by a small clock store in Europe and had a great chat with the man and owner.

I saw he had a vintage Leonidas and he opened it for me, I cant remember but I believe he said it was a Landeron 151 caliber running this beautiful time piece. He also said hes had it for more than a year.

Price tag atm is 1450 Euros, might be able to bring it down , glass could also be replaced. When I look up the same watch with black dial ( one I found has Landeron 248) in it was for sale for over 3500Euros. I am reading about the difference between movement but it seemed to me that 1450 euros could be a good price? taking in account it would need a service since movement seems a little dirty.

Pusher, chrono works and snaps right back in position.

Wanted to know your thoughts? If some connaisseur can spot if it is indeed the Landeron 151 in it.

18k Gold case. 35mm

I have been wanting a vintage chrono in gold for several years now. Like Angelus Chronodato black dial but the price tag is much higher.

Here are a few photos of the watch in question. Would love nayones input, if I missed something and if there is anything I could learn.

cheers

Actually might be a Landeron 49 from zooming under the balance wheel

He also had a nice Zenith but I forgot to check what movement was in it. 8841daf8-4874-436d-857c-7ee01c3fc6eb.thumb.JPG.df895ff05c069c0ec5575d035be66b2e.JPG

Did you notice ,  some letters of LEONIDAS  on dial plate look refreshened,  poor dial paint overall, as we say healthy but ugly bride.🤣

Lets examine the Zenith.

Yeah I remember seeing 18k but can’t remember if it was 18k 750 ( I believe so) or GP/GF. I’ll stop by again.

The movement looks like an L48, not a 151, and definitely not a 49.

Hummm.. hard for me to tell the difference. I have a L48 home and I remember when he said which one it was I was surprised because it was different. Zooming in the photo I see a 4 but it’s more difficult to see the other number. You seem quite sure so I am inclined to def trust you . He might have made a mistake. Poor guy he’s gonna have to see me a 3rd time lol

I appreciate your time offering your input.

Haha I am not sure if it’s the angle and the light but it’s possible. Man I asked him and he grabbed his what seemed like to be a very old neon green loupe and looked at the dial. I have my loupe in my pocket but didn’t take the time to inspect… since I haven’t found ANY dials or subdials similar to that I am inclined to agree with you.. that’s what I dreaded.

Could it also be possible that a 18k gold caseback was put on a gold plated case? Let’s say the dial is not original , then the possibility of having the  “wrong caseback” could be possible

I'm only going on the pictures I found online (e.g. Calibercorner and Rannft websites). The L49 is a column-wheel movement, so definitely not that. Maybe something ending in 49? How that is relevant wrt. the price you were offered, no idea. Check eBay, Chrono 24 etc. for comparisons.

It's possible, but then he's being dishonest. If he's describing the case as gold, then he will be able to show you the hallmarks.

If you're not sure, walk away and do more research.

I forgot about Ranfft. That’s a great source. Thank you for your time trying to help out!  I’ll just go again and this time look at everything. Since the dial seems repainted, he said it’s original but doesn’t mean it’s not repainted.

some leonidas on chrono and sold 3k euros + if solid 18k/original dial . If played worth under 800euros hence my question in finding more.

That sounds like an incredible find, especially with the charm of discovering it in a small European clock shop. The Leonidas with a Landeron 151 at €1450 seems like a fair deal, especially if the chrono functions well and resets properly. A service would be a given, considering the dirt in the movement, but that’s expected with vintage pieces.

Comparing it to the black-dialed version with a Landeron 248 at €3500, the price discrepancy could be due to dial rarity, condition, or collector demand. The Landeron 151 is an earlier cam-switching chronograph movement, whereas the 248 is a later evolution—both solid but with slight differences in feel and history.

If you can confirm the caliber and negotiate a bit, it might be a worthy addition, especially if you’re comfortable with a light restoration. Did you happen to take any pictures of the movement to confirm the reference?

On the upper right lug when looking at rhe movement I see brass plate wear. An original dial hands and movement might be worth that asking but if he says solid gold and it's plate, that reason alone to say no.

Looking at the back and the condition of the pusher I'd be dubious about it even being gold plated.

Thank you for your input ! I think ill pass.
