Hello all, Just moved from US to Europe and brought some of my tools, well most of them. A friend gave me his Ikea desk that goes up or down. I told myself for the next few months it would be good enough. I didnt feel so safe not having borders around the desk to make sure parts to roll of fall off.

Went to the hardware store to buy either thin pieces of wood or plastic or something to glue/stick around the edges.

Ended up seeing a 120cm X 60cm wood top for 30 euros and was like... 30cm longer..  lets do it ! so bought it and came back home and intalled it. Feels so much bigger and better !

Eventually ill get one that i can cut off a little bit and add some space for my arms with a jigsaw but for now this is great !

Will get some clear silicone tomorrow to put around the edges where the top table and side panel meet to make sure there is no crevices. I have to add smaller pieces of wood in the front so when I work screws don't roll off on my side or at least help prevent anything from falling there, which happened a few times !

Would love to get a groove in but dont have the tools. Ill add a photo of a bench i think looks great !

here is a photo of before and after and if any of you have suggestions or Ideas to add to it feel free 🙂

I love the desk's position in the room , great when you dont want to be disturbed. A sign hung on the door knob outside can work , though not quite as effective as your idea.

Haha good one 😉

we are living at a friends house until we find something else and fortunately it is quite a big European flat. 6 bedrooms.  That door opens to a smaller room where we and they put stuff in. That door is never used, there is actually 3 doors that opens to that room and only one is used.

Hi. I think a serving hatch in the door so food and drink can be passed through .

I knew asking for suggestions was the right thing to do. That’s a great idea. Double wagyu cheeseburger extra bacon and a pint. 🍺

Seriously though it’s a tidy set up  but recommend some arm rests and seating so as the work level is across the upper chest region so a not to cause neck and shoulder strain. Ask Old Hippy. Bad posture caused spondylitis. Not good.

Oh the Desk is a electric desk so it goes up or down and I could actually using while standing up and im 6'2 so while this chair is comfortable enough for now, with a seat cushion, the desk is elevated to the right height for the work. Thats a good point you have, I might have ommited to add this info in my thesis lol. Arm rest might come sooner than later bu I might also make so cuts in the table top for the arm rest. I paid the top 30 euros and desk was given to me so wanted to try the bigger set up. Now some mods to make it even better will ensue .

Thank you for your imput.

Sorry for the typo keyboard is in 3 languages ;/

    • If at all possible, find a service guide for the automatic movements your work on, because the lubrication procedures may have different requirements or rely on oils you would not use in a manual wind train (in addition to the braking grease you mentioned). Some autos like older Seikos do not have a manual wind option, so the procedure of letting down the mainspring without being able to use the crown may require a screwdriver in the ratchet wheel screw and great care. Do you have an auto movement you were planning to start with?
    • I am an amateur, so there's that. I do not get fixated on amplitude, lift angles, and beat error. However, 4.8ms would bug me if it were my watch. But you must judge your own skills to appreciate the possibility of going backward. I suggest, that you button it up let your friend enjoy the watch for now. As your skills progress, come back to it and correct it. I assume that this watch has a fixed hairspring pin. Some modern watches have an adjustable pin along with adjustable regulator. These are trivial to get in beat. I own a valjoux 726 my dad gave me on my 18th birthday (a looooong time ago). I broke the ratchet wheel with an aggressive wind 4 yrs ago. I have been waiting for my skills to progress before doing a service. I am close. Your advice is well placed and I will apply it.
    • I didn’t find any anomaly to the left of the red mark…reflection? this is the balance in its pivot in the inverted assembly. i can’t see any obvious kinks  and the spring is flat as far as I can see. Either the stud screw is missing, or it’s glued in… I don’t know. I’m loathe to fiddle with it. Any further insights? Thanks!
    • Update!  I've dismantled it, cleaned all the glue off, and rebuilt and lubricated the base movement. I'll leave the chrono part for another day. It's running well - great amplitude and keeping time, but it's got a beat error of 4.8ms.    How important is it to correct this? I'm worried that the potential for making things worse having to take the hairspring off and on repeatedly to adjust this. Would anyone here accept it at that?
