Hi all, my name is Richard and I am a set of screwdrivers, a case cushion and a pair of tweezers into hobby watchmaking. I was brought to it by inheriting a Tissot Seastar Sonorous, and I am learning on a Velona with an ASST 1950 movement, and an Ingersoll with a Smiths cal 637 movement. The latter may be more of an issue…

Welcome! We always appreciate pictures if you have the means…

Will do!  The ASST 1950 has gone from not running at all to modest amplitude and stopping altogether in some positions - I’ll post some photos later. I have very limited magnification at the moment but a digital microscope is on the way…

Is the stop abrupt or grinding to a hault?

Hi,

More grinding to a halt than abrupt, but it is going from an amplitude of 250°-ish DU to about 90° crown down, if it totally doesn’t stop.

There are other symtoms that may or may not be related - there is a rate oscillation with a period of about a minute - might be fourth wheel related. I have also more or less killed the movement by reinstalling the dial side wheels and the dial, so there are plenty of places to look for trouble! I have also not touched the barrel - I am about to order a new mainspring and dig in there.

Dial up, the power train looked good before I reassembled the dial side. The escapement wheel reversed briefly, as hoped, after spinning the power train, even after lubricating.

There is plenty more fun to be had before this watch is done!

Amplitude loss only  in DU position !   points to something rubbing when in said position, such as hairspring rubbing on balance spokes or underside of the cock, or sticky or magnetised spring,  two adjacent coil fouling, also pivot shoulder rubbing on jewel hole in balance setting cracked hole jewels or damaged end stone, furthuremore the  roller table might be rubbing on fork horn، or balance rim rub on fork cocks thats not to mention a host of problems with guard pin.

When it does stop , does it starts running if you assist the oscilator?

In case of a problem with  gear teeth or pinion leaves of fourth  or/and with adjacent wheels, pictures help to spot the fault.

If you just put a loup in front of your phone's lens, you get higher magnification, to show us the suspect parts.

Good luck
