Timex M32 movement won't hand wind or set time.

Recommended Posts

I have an early 70s vintage Timex M32 which will not set the time or date or wind with the stem.  It is an automatic movement and will run if started with the oscillating weight.

Anyone have any idea what could be wrong?  Alternately, if anyone wants to have a crack at fixing it, I'll send it along and pay any reasonable fee.

Any and all help is appreciated. It's a really cool watch and I'd like to wear it, but my repair skills are not up to the challenge.

If it does tick when the automatic works winds it, the problem is probably under the dial.  In addition to @Neverenoughwatches 's questions, I would also ask do you hear or feel any grinding when you turn the crown? These movements use a rocker bar mechanism; when the crown is pushed in, it should force the rocker bar one way to engage with the winding ratchet wheel. When the crown is pulled out, the rocker bar shifts the other way to engage with the setting gears. If it does neither of those things, something could be stuck in between, or there could be an issue with a tiny gear with a "D" shaped hole the winding stem passes through, that transfers the stem rotation into the rocker bar's pinions. Or some other possibilities too.

On a Timex, the winding and setting are pretty easy parts to deal with, as there aren't any difficult flying springs or anything really small or fragile. And the parts are all accessible under the dial without going deep into the watch movement. An auto is more challenging than a manual though.
