How clear was the picture of it. There are lots of black dial military type watches. Was there a view of the case back ? Which country are you in ?

Let me see if I can find it...okay found it. Sooooo....would you like me to post it or a PM? 🤣😉...

I think i have some more hiding from the last 2 years of hoarding to be honest. At least 2 movements i know of , i definitely have a vertex 59 that was used in both the trade pattern and DD.

Lets all have a looksee, see if we can figure out what it is.  Oh and before i forget Rich i know you have a Leonidas hiding in your house, dig it out for another posting up somewhere, we have another fresh head in rehajm that might know what you have.

Ah ok. Now thats confused me, ATP i was sure is the Brit military denotation only of their spec watches. Now the D and H either side of the serial number is the German spec military marking. I feel someone has added the ATP.

Can you read the dial name, the hands are a terrible addition. Someone has been playing silly buggers with what would have been a nice Germal mil-spec watch.

…the lume looks old but recent and so does the and arrow, yes. Strange…if someone were trying to extract more value there are easier ways…send it to Ebay for example instead of flanking a few pocket watches in a live auction. Then again if it’s crap that is why it is there…

…more pics!

Yes. As I said earlier I assumed they had the description wrong and moved on.  Anything military style with a black dial often gets the dirty dozen label. It looks like someone may have tried to help this one along…😕. Shame, yes…

Another Army pattern on its way. This time a Timor, that makes a count of four. I'm hoping the strap is an original army issue.

If the strap is original, what do you intend to do?  I would want to wash it to within an inch of its life

I label and stash them in a sealed plastic bag where hopefully the current residents can’t escape, then I find I nice fixed lug strap…

I wonder if that "German milspec" was "liberated" and subsequently used by the British military, either during or after hostilities.

It does seem odd to have both sets of markings, and while it is possible someone added the broad arrow and ATP (Army Trade Pattern) later to try to make it more saleable, there may be some other story to it.

That very possible Andy, if we did that i would have thought though that the German serial number would have been scrubbed as well ?

👍Ah thanks for that Rich. I have the same Record calibre in my DD which has a fixed bal jewel

The caliber is correct also the same as my DD so the movement alone is a couple of hundred quid. What the auction bid at ?

What's amazing is the auction house simply recycled the photo identifying the fake! Red card...

...I suppose they at least hid it in a lot with others instead of highlighting it like it was legitimate. The Walthams don't deserve that treatment, however...and like you say maybe there's value in the movement for someone...

Yeah the exact photo of the ATP/DH caseback you posted is from an ATP resource and strap retail site.   I was looking for another black  dial Record  which were made for both the Brit and German army. Found that same photo, big coincidence if you ask me.

That adds extra work. Unless that lead to an extra beer ration, I doubt if they would have taken the trouble.

If it was liberated, then surely no reason for the ATP, just wear it. The engraving for the ATP looks rough, so maybe your idea of trying to add value is correct. Though I think it probably reduces value.  I don't know just my opinion.

See the picture added, its the same watch from an trade pattern information site.

I was thinking more of genuinely liberated. I was thinking more of a situation when the allies took control of parts of Germany. At the time,  a lot of Wehrmacht equipment was seized. There would be no point in letting a consignment of perfectly serviceable mil. spec. Swiss watches sit in a warehouse if they could be re-inventoried and issued to allied soldiers.

The ATP looks rough and the Initials are often seperated with a full stop, but not always. All this depends on who is marking up the watch and what they are using at the time. Some are perfectly centered and stamped others are roughly engraved and anywhere on the back.

The Timor arrived this morn. Richard you are right the strap is tenacious mank and needs a good clean if its staying on. It looks old but i dont think its the original.  Dial looks good and everything seems correct for what the watch is, it runs and seems to be keeping time ok . I was a bit worried as the seller said the lug pins had been repaired, not the best job possibly lead soldered in, not sure until it goes under the scope. But its good for the price, ive seen these at three and four times what i paid for it.

Hopefully it is silver soldered, but if not, remove as much of the lead as possible mechanically (file and emery paper), as leaded solder can screw up attempts to use silver solder and/or braze things.

I've not done any brazing or silvers soldering on watch cases (yet), but I have used these techniques in the past to fix stuff. The internet is awash with how to techniques for silvers soldering and brazing. I',m not sure welding is practical with small brass objects, unless you have access to some pretty specialist micro-welding kit.

I suspect silver soldering shouldn't present too many problems, and is probably much more likely to produce a good result than attempting to weld stuff at home. "Easy" silver solders melt at a considerably lower temperature than brass, so you should be reasonably safe using them. Brazing might be more hazardous as the brazing rod may melt at a similar temperature to the case, and you really don't want to turn the whole thing into a Salvador Dali art work.

Your mileage may vary of course, and for all I know I may be speaking to an expert micro tig/mig welder.

Once soldered, and re shaped, filed and  polished, you will then need to re-plate the case too, to hide the repair, and probably re-drill the lugs if necessary.

Keep us posted if you go down this road.

Thanks andy, the welding makes me nervous the soldering i should be able to handle. Now only one of the lugs is drilled on each side, which would have to be to get the pin in. Something that just hadn't crossed my mind as being original. I will have to check my others.

Continuing my trip down the Accutron rabbit hole, this non-running Spaceview is on its way to me. The seller made me an offer I couldn't refuse.

I haven't been able to cross reference the serial #, but it looks original enough for me.

I've got a couple watches lined up in addition to the one I posted about in the Newbie repairer category -- waiting for my confidence to arrive. Not a huge investment, but I'd like to give them the attention they deserve, and hopefully once I get inside, they deserve the attention I give them!

Something about having a small queue makes me feel a bit more urgency in getting stuck in.

My vote is the Poljot. Under that crystal I bet that dial is great. I'd relume instead of keeping the original...the Gruen is a nice classic. Work on the Ricoh first 🤣....

    • Bad news: Longines doesn't provide this service free of charge any longer. I have to ask for an extract from the archives or a certificate of authenticity, but I'm afraid it's not worth the cost for this watch. Too bad 🥴
    • Tool for removing or pressing the bezel? Most likely you have to remove the bezel (with a knife) before removing old crystal or inserting a new one. You can press the bezel with the crystal press if you have a suitable die with straight walls or otherwise a die that has enough clearance that it doesn't touch the crystal when pressing the bezel.
    • This will be my first crystal replacement, I have a press, but looking at the watch I wonder if I might need a bezel tool also. Any and all help appreciated.
    • I'm not entirely sure you fully understand what he's doing in the video. For one thing he's giving examples of things like about 16 minutes he talks about opening up the regulator just a little bit. Opening up the regulator slows the watch down to compensate for that he moves the regulator fast and now it's keeping time again but the regulator pins are too far apart. I have an image down below on top of it shows the effect of regulator pins and amplitude. If the regulator pins are farther apart than the example down below then at a higher amplitude timekeeping will be much worse. Why the regulator pins are supposed to be adjusted as an average rule approximately twice the thickness of the mainspring itself. In other words if you look at the spacing it have one half of the hairspring thickness on either side of the hairspring itself. There is like he talks about the video a little bit of adjustment here and there. So in his example where he opened them up it will really dramatically screw up timekeeping based on amplitude. Then when you get to the 20 some minutes like you say he is adjusting the regulator pins closer together to get a more even timekeeping based on amplitude and amplitude changes are caused by going to various positions. Then and the other example of the image down below regulator pins too far apart and they hairspring is not centered and look what that does the timekeeping. So hairspring is supposed to be centered regulator pins are supposed to properly spaced. Then you get reasonably even timekeeping like it shows in the upper image. It's not like we're regulating out positional errors like poising errors because that's something entirely different.   In the part number above and in the video both of you left off details. I which version of either of your watches I will just make you's timing specifications for your watch down below may specify how you're supposed to do it other words you wind up the watch fully wound up you wait 10 to 60 minutes in the four positions it should be within 60 seconds. Yes it can be closer but you may not actually get zero.     Now let's compare with the 2892 and see where we might have a discrepancy. First off we have a problem of which one is a using did he use the chronometer grade 1 or the top grade or what?  None is basically just much tighter timing tolerances. So when he's using an example watch conceivably might be a chronometer grade watch then things are going to be much more  perfect than what you're going to see.       NH35_TG.pdf ETA 2892-A2 Manufacturing info.pdf
