Much like @mikepilk, I took a chance on a movement-unseen Citizen Square Custom. If I did my serial decoding right, it should be vintage 1969.

Some discoloration of the dial, but otherwise looks to be in nice shape with the original bracelet. There's a video that shows it running and the price was right, so fingers crossed.

I like the funky day/date setup, round and square windows in non-standard positions.

That sounds lovely…

Jacquemart automaton repeating pocket watch.

Wow! A watch with a flyweight governor!

In hindsight it makes sense, as it can be more compact than the vane uses in a clock, but still impressive engineering.

These are some from a couple of job lot ebay batches totalling 40+ watches I got a few weeks ago, ~£2 or less each. I'd only looked at a couple of specifically interested ones so far, as I already had others of interest to look at

I've just gone through some of the smallest ladies ones. I was expecting them to be mostly cheap quartz, but only one of them was - the others are all look like good quality mechanical ones!

There are also a good selection of other types, including a couple of nice looking old Casios - and some blingy things..

Despite having to change up your magnification and get your head into the super micro mech zone, I admit I'm not adverse to buying women's watches. You can finish up working on some good high end movements for a fraction of the price of men's. They also finish off that little black dress number and heels look on Saturday night outs. I would laugh but i have had some very odd Saturday nights out , ok go on then I'll laugh, i just made that up....ahem...😅

No mate... they stopped making them many years ago.  But it's arrived an it's quite mint.  😍

Well it showed up from Pakistan, and it looks like my gamble paid off. There's some staining on the dial, but I think that's to be expected.

Otherwise it looks great and I can't wait to clean it up! The only issue is the bracelet is too small for my beefy wrist.

Size comparison with my Seiko Kinetic 5M62.

I just got a Timex Macguyver field watch for under $20US. From photos, condition looks pretty worn, but I'm happy enough because all my past attempts at buying one of these ended when I wouldn't go over $75.

And it will be my first watch with a 2 piece stem, though not my first plastic monobloc Timex. (the weird UFO Fun Timer series has a little threaded nylon plug in the back to reach the stem screw instead of a split stem)

for under $20 that is  great pickup.  Not the traditional split stem.  the crown just unscrews.

Oh man am I glad you showed up to tell me that before I tried to yank it out! Yesterday I actually found a photo of one of these deconstructed on watchuseek or someplace, and the picture was attributed to you. But the stem in the photo was assembled and I was planning to track you down here to make sure it came apart. I assume there must be some space to grip the stem while unscrewing the crown and I can't wait for this to be delivered.

front loaded case - lift crystal. lift dial ring. at the 3 hour there is gap to insert tool.  Timex recommended a flat screw driver. but I use needle nose pliers that are filed down to fit into the space.  Grab the stem and twist the crown off.  actually this is the same as the 1960 Marlin 🙂

I have an unknown movement blue dialled "Marquis" early quartz Swiss movement day/date "chunky gents" (according to the listing) watch on its way.

This just failed to make it into the 404 club, but gets into the "ten ten" squad with ease.

The combination of the blue dial and the unknown early quartz movement had me intrigued, and as is often the case, I was the only bidder.

There is a slight chance it may be another Tissot 2030 based watch, or something similar from that era. It may of course be something much more mundane.

I'll keep you all posted if/when it arrives.

Here's my eighteen dollar Timex MacGuyver field watch from a couple of weeks ago. The case has a couple of scrapes, the movement cleaned up and runs not the best Timex M104 I've done but acceptably. The crystal sanded up like new and the dial and hands are perfect.

After over an hour of sanding disks and not really getting anywhere I thought to myself " what the hell am I doing " a new glass from cousins is a couple of quid . The one on the left is my effort, looks clear but is covered in micro scratches with the highest grit  of wet and dry i had, anything less than diamond compound isn't getting them out.

This arrived in the lunch time post, and it is indeed an early quartz movement. An SIS - ETA - ESA 9183.

There is a post about this movement, and a link to the datasheet here ->

There is a good teardown of the movement here -> https://watchguy.co.uk/service-vehns-esa-9183/

I don't currently have a suitable battery for it, as the only cells I have expired in 2021, and when fitted, the movement attempts to run, but the cell voltage has dropped below a volt, so it ticks for a bit and then stops.

Hopefully all it needs is a fresh cell, which I now have on order. I'll probably give it a quick service when the cells arrive anyway, just to ensure that it keeps on ticking for a few more years. I'll also need to give it a fresh crystal as the one that is currently fitted has a couple of deep scratches. The band it came on is almost certainly not original as it doesn't fit correctly, but I'm sure I'll have something that compliments it once it is running.

These are fun movements, much easier to work on than more modern quartz designs, everything big.

I did a Smiths Astral equipped with with a 9183 here.

    • Aw come on Andy, it was just a comparison between spending 30 quid and tackling a tricky piece of work. You appeared to be volunteering,  i volunteer for stuff all the time it gets me into all kinds of trouble.
    • It's not really shown here , but the blade flips over, so it faces the other way. The knob and threaded case holder then pushes the caseback seam into the blade. Once the blade starts to penetrate into it, the lever and blade are lifted , which should hopefully pop the back off. A lot of fashion style cases have very tight seams and need a sharp blade to start separating them.  Don't buy the cheaper plastic versions of this tool, the posts with the pins through for blade holder break easily if the apply extra force to blade.
    • You will still be looking for a balance complete I’m afraid, this is the balance staff, balance wheel and hairspring in one package. Hairspring and the balance wheel are matched in the factory. Whilst we can change a balance staff the hairspring and balance wheel stay together.   Tom
    • The hairspring end has come adrift from the small terminal barrel.  I have tried to remove the taper pin to relocate it, but the task is beyond my skill set, eyes, hands and being in my 70s, probably beyond my life expectancy.  It is not too badly mangled on the end.  On the ebay offer, that really is a bit on the rich side.  I'll keep looking, maybe a good hairspring will turn up with a shot balance staff. As for time spent on knees.  I made up one of these from 3M magnetic tape and a piece of wood.  It works well for magnetic parts. Other things I have suffered with.  I found lubricants so very expensive that I bought some very small syringes and tiny needles.  I just decant a drop into my oiling pots when I start a movement and the remainder keeps really well in the syringes. Finally identifying the correct screw for the part led me to make up the board in the final pic.   Thanks for the info. Kind regards   Chris
    • Yes that's the type @watchweasol is referring too but I don't like them as you don't get any feel to what's happening.
