Dial code is difficult to read. Possibly 1983, possibly 1973... I would think the former rather than the latter.
Probably made in Dundee, and on its way to the 404 club.

Arrived today. Quartz trash. Seller's listing was just a pile of lies and fake reviews. Dispute process started.

I reached out to the seller, and all I got was an auto reply of utter nonsense. So I started the dispute process, which was immediately found in my favor. I left a review on the listing, and was immediately followed by someone else in the same situation leaving a pretty much identical review, so this is a serial thing. The listing is still up, and the seller is still active, but I guess that's Ali-X. I have a return label, and just need to pack it up and drop it off.

Not sure I'll venture into the next cheapest. I was feeling super watch-itchy, and spendthrifty. Since then, I've done a massive upgrade on my daily driver (no-date watch with an elabore grade 2824-2, replaced with a date free top grade Selitta SW200-1), and I'm part of the way through assembling a 7750-based chronograph from parts. I only have so many wrists!

Looks like my gamble paid off again. I haven't opened the caseback yet (still at work) but it arrived ticking at a ridiculous rate, the second hand sweeps, the day, date, and time all set.

There's a little ding in the dial, but I was expecting that. The back is slightly dented in, but we can fix that too. For the price I paid, I am extremely happy.

I took a video to try capturing how the dial shimmers. It's like a butterfly's wing.

Seiko Levante Maritime 5y39-6a50, shipped in from Helsinki. I love the compass rose dial with that very unique hour hand, seiko also made a 24hr version that I would like to get.

I particularly like watches that have unusual or technically interesting movements; I found AdamT's Watham Fontomatic absolutely fascinating, and while researching that discovered some other unusual Waltham watches & movements.

These two are now on the way to me:

The first one is an unknown; I cannot find any definitive information on what the movement actually is, but it is running and the typical selling price is seems to be two or three times what I paid for it:

Waltham_65.png.thumb.png.ef12f7035a8829d1ebb830a0b2e26903.png

This second one is definitely interesting - a 65 Jewel one!

I have found some further info on these & it seems the movement is based on an AS1580, using cap jewels just about everywhere possible plus numerous jewels inset in the rotor edge, to act as (sliding) guide bearings!

It's a "parts or repair" with the dial separate, missing the crystal and minute hand at least; but a good price even so.

And a bit of comedy value relating to the first of these - similar one at a discounted price (according to a clueless seller) as it's a non runner: Just $1500.00 please!

Just read the description, one listed at €1600 but because this one is in poor condition a huge discount at €1500. Hehe.  Both movements are interesting, post photos when they arrive.

This is my "no more watches for me" watch. I hope. At least for a while. I've been very fond of all things Japanese lately, especially vintage LM and KS Seikos. And old Seiko tools. I just put together a complete set of S-220 crystal presss. Anyway here's the watch. KS 4502-7001. Manual wound and originally chronometer graded according to the serial stamped in the bridge. 36000 bph. I hope the parts are ok. The crown is a diver type so there's a little struggle to change the gasket.

Haha- I have so many of those 🧐

…that’s an attractive movement. I’m usually offended by the appearance of a Seiko movement. Hide it quick!

Advertised as 'Chaika 17 Jewels Men's Mechanical Watch USSR with Box & Papers - Not Working' - all of which is technically correct, however the box and papers seem to belong to a Raketa 2614.H based watch and I'm pretty certain this is Chaika 1601.

Having said all that, the watch looks clean and the dial is perfect, and furthermore I have several USSR Raketa 2614.H watches from the correct period,  that would most probably have started life in a box identical to this one.

AsPurchased1-l1600.webpTranslated.thumb.jpg.75eb3e314be09947c5f9657588637921.jpg

Obviously the 'Mechanism no' wont match the one on this "Certificate of Acceptance" but that is a minor detail. I wouldn't be trying to pass anything off as unauthentic, and its not as if this is a solid gold Rolex.

Since the cost of the lot was well within the 404 club rules, I'll be pretty happy with whatever turns up in this fun little lot.

Servicing it should be easy too as I have several spares 1601 movements. One interesting note. As you can see from the translated image, the 2614.H is specified to be accurate to -20 to + 40 seconds per day. Most of the ones I have serviced do considerably better than this.

Edit: I wonder what '19 rubies Average' alludes to? "Maybe you get the full 19, maybe one or two fell out in production, maybe we slipped a few extra in just for good measure".

I think your translate didn't work too well.

It just says 19 Rubies and then something along the lines of Average Day which I presume relates to the accuracy.

That dial is so similar to my gramps Sekonda,.it must run through a lot of Russian brands.

So anyway i dont always choose a watch for how it looks but whats inside and how it will perform.  I have a thing for military watches DDs in particular,  the grail DD being the rare guessimated production volume of 1000  made Grana. Unlikely i will ever own one but one can wish. So I cant have the watch but i can have a little taste of it and that comes in the form of this Certina which houses the same caliber. Granted it is a Certina signed movement and the spec may be slightly different but it is a Kurth Freres 320. Thats probably as close as i will get to the most rare DD

Well the other "Waltham 65" that I posted the ebay photo of a few days ago (26th July) has just arrived. This was advertised as in running order.

The seller needs a serious lesson in packing such things! This is all the packing in the box; the watch itself was loose already:

IMG_3304.thumb.jpg.4ae22c5b698e91f75b50b6774c2fb94b.jpg

And the rattling about it endured was bad enough to knock two of the hands off!

I've sent the same photos to the seller, to show how it was received.

I have not looked inside it yet; possibly later today.

I've spent quite a lot of time looking for chronographs for the 404 club, and for obvious reasons, they are rarer than unicorn poop, however no sooner had I spent the time needed to bring a Swatch Irony chrono back from the dead, than this popped up on fleabay.

Its a Seiko CAL.VD57B based watch, and has the added bonus of having a blue dial, so it should scratch both the 404 club chronograph itch and the blue dial itch at the same time. It also allegedly works and has a fresh battery in it.

I'm not sure why there were no other bidders, but I am certainly not complaining. It may not be the Zenith Chronomaster El Primero Blue Dial 42MM similar to this  that I was tempted by the other day, but it does have the advantage of not making my bank manager nervous, and I suspect with a little TLC and perhaps a less boring strap, it should be quite a presentable piece. Two pounds eighty five plus shipping, before you ask.

The watch is pretty much what I expected, and its issue is simply that someone has mangled the click spring, so I should be able to fix that.
Meanwhile, here is the insert from the box.

.. as to what was originally in the box in 1987, well this link 1984 catalog might give some ideas..
https://web.archive.org/web/20160722121138/http://www.raketa.com/catalog-1984/

Given the size of the box, and the description in the paperwork, it is far more likely it originally contained one of these.

They have the correct caliber, with 19 jewels and the "single date". I do have one somewhere, so I'll need to dig it out.

I really can't trust myself around Accutrons. Won this one for just $102. I guess because it was a custom dial for the Bard President's Club, but I think it's pretty cool.

Also that font for the Accutron 😍

Is it tuning fork or quartz?

For some reason I thought it was tuning fork (probably placement of the crown), but on further research it's quartz. That's what I get for impulse bidding 😉

Still, for the price I'm not mad about it, if it's in the condition shown in the pictures.

I gotta say, this looks like an unworn watch. T3, so 1993 (the year I graduated high school!).

Box is in very decent shape, and came with the original instructions and warranty cards. Neat!

There is just this one extra piece that I assume came from the box somewhere. Maybe it's a spring to hold the lid in place or something.

Just bought a job lot but the one I'm most interested in is this Citizen Crystron LC.

I've done some searching but can't find anything like it so guess
I'll have to wait till it arrives and see what details are on the case.

So it arrived this morning and it's a 40-3032, fitted a new battery and away it went.

Buttons are seized so had to take it out of the case to set the time but will
have a look this weekend and then decide if I'm going to keep it or not.

I'm on a bit of a low cost chronograph hunt at the moment. This one is from a Barnardos charity auction.
Its a little scruffy, and obviously needs a crystal and the case could do with some work, but I like the layout.
Possibly a Miyota JS25 or similar.

    • Aw come on Andy, it was just a comparison between spending 30 quid and tackling a tricky piece of work. You appeared to be volunteering,  i volunteer for stuff all the time it gets me into all kinds of trouble.
    • It's not really shown here , but the blade flips over, so it faces the other way. The knob and threaded case holder then pushes the caseback seam into the blade. Once the blade starts to penetrate into it, the lever and blade are lifted , which should hopefully pop the back off. A lot of fashion style cases have very tight seams and need a sharp blade to start separating them.  Don't buy the cheaper plastic versions of this tool, the posts with the pins through for blade holder break easily if the apply extra force to blade.
    • You will still be looking for a balance complete I’m afraid, this is the balance staff, balance wheel and hairspring in one package. Hairspring and the balance wheel are matched in the factory. Whilst we can change a balance staff the hairspring and balance wheel stay together.   Tom
    • The hairspring end has come adrift from the small terminal barrel.  I have tried to remove the taper pin to relocate it, but the task is beyond my skill set, eyes, hands and being in my 70s, probably beyond my life expectancy.  It is not too badly mangled on the end.  On the ebay offer, that really is a bit on the rich side.  I'll keep looking, maybe a good hairspring will turn up with a shot balance staff. As for time spent on knees.  I made up one of these from 3M magnetic tape and a piece of wood.  It works well for magnetic parts. Other things I have suffered with.  I found lubricants so very expensive that I bought some very small syringes and tiny needles.  I just decant a drop into my oiling pots when I start a movement and the remainder keeps really well in the syringes. Finally identifying the correct screw for the part led me to make up the board in the final pic.   Thanks for the info. Kind regards   Chris
    • Yes that's the type @watchweasol is referring too but I don't like them as you don't get any feel to what's happening.
