My main hobby is coin photography but I am also into woodworking, metalworking, and electronics. My latest project was a pulsed 50 kV power source for powder coating (painting metal). I also have had a interest in watches for some time.  What I find interesting now is the use of electronics to analyze running watches. I am now building the microphone and amplifier for Watch-O-Scope.

Sounds like your skills are going to complement our knowledge base.  Perhaps you can advise which watches you are interested in, I have a liking for the tuning fork Accutrons which you may have already come across and find interesting as the electronic side combining with the mechanical is quite amazing taking into account when they were made and of course they are born in the USA.

i have a relative that works for a company that specialises in powder coating and it is quite an impressive and durable finish.  Your project would find interest from our members as even though this is primarily a horological site we do have parts of the forum where we talk on side topics and perhaps as Bob says there may be an application there regarding watch cases.

Concerning Vic's comments: I have powder coated things like microscope stands and bases for camera copy stands but never anything small. I may try that.

Strange that you mentioned the Accutron. When I was young I really got interested in watches when the Accutron first came out. I read all the articles I saw about it. I never bought one, though, as they were out of my price range then. Later on I did get one of the first affordable quartz watches, a Timex. I was working in Switzerland in 1975 and I wore it there. Nobody had a quartz watch then.

I just bought an IWC Pilot's watch mark 18, mainly for its looks. I've read a bit about these and was concerned that they cheapened the movement of these watches. But mine is accurate to within a second a day so I am amazed and happy. (Have I been lucky or is that how they are?)

IWC are excellent watches...or they used to be? I haven't followed them for a while and what you say makes me doubt my words...I'd get an IWC any time though! Now, you need to realize that any quartz movement, no matter how cheap is "amazingly" accurate and more so than the most sophisticated mechanical ones. I believe that it is not the accuracy what makes us wear them, isn't it?!
