On the first of July in Australia all items purchased from overseas are meant to be subject to 10% GST.

While no-one likes paying more for something the biggest issue is the way the government wants to collect the tax. Rather than collect the tax when the item reaches Australia like it works in most other countries the Australian Government wants to make the company selling the item collect the tax, and pay it directly to the Australian government, this includes ebay and Amazon, who have both said if this law comes to pass on the first of July they will not be doing it, instead they will ban people from Australia buying from their sites except for items on ebay Australia, or Amazon Australia. If they do this its likely other companies will follow suit. Making it much harder to get uncommon items in Australia.

Regardless whether we end up just with a scorched earth policy and Australians having to use other means to buy from overseas items will go up by 10% in just over 6 weeks times, so I need to buy my big ticket purchases before then.

My first one is a Horotec Press for opening screw back cases which I've just ordered.

and a set of carbide gravers for my watchmaker lathe

Later this week I think I will be ordering my Chinese watch timer.

I'm looking forward to my goodies arriving.

So, would the application of this Australian law also apply to person-to-person sales?  Or is it only applicable to business-to-person sales?  It seems nightmarish to enforce.  How will the Australian government know that a transaction has been tendered in order to start the collection process?

Wasn't that how the original Mad Max started? :pulling-hair-out:

Aren't Governments around the world just fantastic in the way that they look after the people of their countries.

If you sold me an item on ebay if ebay didn't just black list Australia like they say they will. Ebay would have to collect the 10% GST and send it to the Australian government. I'm assuming that would mean I would have to pay an extra 10% on final price including postage, as postage is counted for working out GST payable.

If you were to message me on this forum and tell em you had an item for sale and I bought it directly from you, you would not collect the GST as you dont make over $75,000 AUD a year on sales to Australia. Its unclear how or if it would be taxed when it arrived in AUstralia. If it was new it would probably be taxed, if it was old maybe not.

Either way its going to be a disaster, and I want to get my expensive goods from overseas before it kicks in.

Anyone know of a good retailer that sells watch cleaning machines and will ship to Australia without it costing as much as the machine?

Why you need a cleaning machine, it's little more than a fetish fir the fixated. Get a $20 ultrasonic on aliexpress an good fluid.
Also, I think that Australians have litte to complain coming from AUD 1500 allowance Check out EU with VAT (your GST) rats up to 25%. That without mentioning developing countries with duties of 150% and no delivery, you have to go to custom and open the package in front if them.

Allowance is $1000 AUD, not $1500. (Until 1st of July when it goes)

I've got a Chinese ultrasonic I currently use which works, but want to step up a notch. I recently sold my BSA motorcycle so have some money set aside for new tools.

I never said Australia has it the hardest, just that costs will go up by 10% on the first of July and I'm just trying to make sure I buy the expensive items I want before then to make my  money go further.

Yes our GST is a lot less than EU, but in general the price of items if bought in Australia is massively inflated compared to overseas, mainly due to the much smaller market place in Australia compared to the EU or the USA.

I've been to Australia twice in the past few years. On the first occasion AUD was at its peak. It was a bit intimidating to see restaurant meals at $60, beer $5, modest hotels $120 a night, etc. Then I learned that a delivery driver working extra-time, can raise AUD 2400 per week. Most workers in Europe don't get even close to that per month.

As you say jdm. I am from Sweden and that is a EU country. If i would to buy say anything from USA or Australia or any country outside EU  i would probably have to pay 25% tax on the watch or parts i buy? Even if i buy from say Norway that is a fellow Nordic country. Strange. But i find a lot of stuff anyway. Both in Sweden and around EU

Wonder what happens when Brexit kicks in?

GST is that global shipping that Ebay has? If so that is SH..

That Cousins Uk will stop charging VAT at UK rates for non-trade UE orders, which will pay VAT at their rates in customs, plus handling fees and (possibly) import duties.

No, it's just the name for VAT used in some countries.

    • Of course it will continue Richard.
    • I have stripped and cleaned a Hermle ships clock. It was just oily, no major faults, and I reassembled it, following my photos in reverse order. The time train is fine but the strike train will not play the ships bell strike for half-past. Ships bells play a four hour sequence for the 'watches' and play double 'ding' for the hour and the double dings plus one for the half past (eg half past the second hour is 'ding-ding' 'ding-ding' 'ding'). Sounds complicated but it isn't really. The strike wheel consists of pairs of bumps (for the ding-ding) and no single bumps. There must me some mechanism on the half-past that lifts the strike lever over one of the bumps so only one ding is played. When I get to a half past, it still plays double ding. I have a feeling it is to do with the lever in front of the rack (there is a sprung attachment  on it) and the position of the wheel (to the right) with the two pins that lets that lever fall, but no matter where I place that wheel I cannot get a single ding at half past! Please can someone help with advice on positioning so I can fix this? BTW Happy Easter 🐣
    • No it's not 52. I had looked at the Pocket Watch lift angles thread, which lists Elgin 6s as something really high like 62° but visually that is not at all what this watch is doing. I think 42° is more correct and that's where my machine is setup. The watch has a million problems but I have made solid progress. Impulse jewel replaced. Hairspring didn't match the balance (which also doesn't match the serial) but I got it down into range this weekend with 8 or 10 huge timing washers. Replaced the mainspring, balance and train are nice and free. At this point it is running consistently and in beat at about 160°, the third wheel has a bend that sends the timegrapher on a little roller coaster every 8 minutes or so. Remaining amplitude problems may be down to the escapement. The banking pins were way out and it didn't run at all before I started. It has one of the old brass escape wheels rather than steel, and I assume the faces its teeth are probably worn or scored in a way I can't yet fix (or see without a microscope). I know this watch is not going to run above 250° but I am going to keep trying to get above 200. But the best part about this watch? Some unscrupulous person stamped "21 JEWELS" on the train bridge sometime in the past, right on top of the Damascening. It's a 15 jewel movement.
    • I think it would rather be the blast of high current drain that would do the damage. But if used occasionally to maybe fix a mainspring or do dial feet it might be worth trying especially if the mainspring or a replacement couldn’t be found.    Tom
